Profiling is the recording and classification of behaviors. This occurs through collecting information from on line and offline purchase data, supermarket savings cards, white pages, surveys, sweepstakes and contest entries, financial records, property records, U.S. Census records, motor vehicle data, automatic number information, credit card transactions, phone records, credit records, product warranty cards, the sale of magazine and catalog subscriptions, and public records. Profiling has sparked an entire industry euphemistically labeled "Customer Relations Management" (CRM) or "Personalization."
Companies collect information derived from a number of resources to build comprehensive profiles on individuals in order to sell products and to sell dossiers on behavior. Everybody is subject to this kind of profiling and with some kind of privacy safe guards we can live with it.
Racial profiling is inclusion of race in the profile of a persons considered likely to commit a particular crime. In the United States, the practice is illegal. Unfortunately due to thread of the terrorism some degree of profiling terrorists is employed at the airports. I do not like it but it seem to protect us.

I believe it occurs maybe for a good reason or bad reason. Good reason to keep bad seeds out, bad reason is when you're profiling based off being prejudiced.
