funny characters we don't understand?

In China they look precisely like a western form keyboard. We basically variety the word in phonetically and the corresponding character pops up. Like if I variety the word "dian nao" meaning computing gadget in chinese language and press the gap bar, then the characters ?? pop up and replace "dian nao". The keyboard that "John ok" confirmed you became a Hebrew keyboard.

I would imagine there are many different ones since there are many different asian languages.
