Yes, the pearls to the teeth test is true. The fake ones are smooth, while the rough ones have a slight texture similar to the enamel of teeth. Don't let the color throw you off. Real pearls have an irredecent quality to them and can look different colors when exposed to different light. I think this is particularly true of black pearls (which I think are stunning!). I would take them to a jeweler to be 100% sure.
Hope you didn't get cheated!

You don't want to bite your pearls, just gently rub them on the front of your teeth. If it feels slightly grainy, they are probably real. Fake pearls are almost always completely smooth. The better way to test them is by rubbing two pearls together very gently, and the same thing, if it is grainy, they are probably real. If your pearls are knotted between each pearl, that is an indication that they are real too. Real pearls are individually knotted between each pearl to protect the pearls from rubbing on each other therefore damaging them. Also it means if your strand breaks, you do not lose all of your pearls. To truly test pearls, it will take a pearl expert but these suggestions will give you a pretty good indication :)

it is very easy to get taken these days , maybe this will help. First most pearl necklaces are hand tied between each pearl. Second when you rub the strand of pearls across your teeth they should feel slightly rough or slightly sandy. Fake pearls wont. Try them against a set that you know arent real to compare . good luck!!

The guy i bought my pearls from held my pearls under a lighter flame for a while and the finish was still perfect, fake pearls.....the finish would burn because of the synthetic nature.

I beleive the way to tell is to bite gently on the pearl and feel its texture. if it is smooth, it's fake. Real pearls will be slightly coarse.

Do the bite test. You'll be able to tell the texture by biting it(light bites though you don't want to hurt yourself) . The real ones have a rougher texture while the fake ones has a much smoother texture.

If you rub them on one of your front teeth, it will feel rough. Fake pearls will be smooth.

I know this will sound odd, but it's accurate: bite one (gently) and it it feels smooth, they're fake. If it feels kind of gritty, they're real. Good luck, I hope you didn't get ripped off.
