Wmcritter is right, John Hanson was elected by the members of the Continental Congress as the First President of the Continental Congress, but he was never President under the newly United States. That title goes to George Washington.

Under the US Constitution of 1789 or 90 or whenever, George Washington was our first president elected by the electorial college as spelled out in the Constitution.

There were 6 or so "presidents" under the Articles of Confederation that were formed in 1776 [74-75?] until the US Constitution was ratified.

John Hanson was the first president under the Articles of Confederation, which was our first attempt at a central government to govern the united states.
