1. You are talking about Gundam Seed right?
Athrun didn't commit suicide. Who on Earth gave you that idea? Genesis wasn't able to fire because Athrun self destructed Justice at the core of Genesis, forcing Genesis to self destruct. Then, Athrun rode on Cagalli's Strike Rouge which was following behind in order to escape from the blast after hearing her words to "fight for your life (no matter how miserable it is)".
2. Rey, a clone of Rau, was raised up by Gilbert ever since he was born. He is just showing pure affection like a child to his beloved father. Yup, it was freaky. ;-)

Since I watched of Gundam SEED and the sequal. I won't tell you since it might be spoiler for other who didn't see the 1st season, which it better than Destiny due the lack of the end. So, let be fair. 1) Athrun didnt die. He planned to. He wanted to detonate Justice inside GENESIS, but Cagalli stop him and told him to continue life with her. He board Cagalli's strike rouge with her and set Justice to go BOOM while he and Cagalli escaped.
2) Rey thinks of Gil as Daddy~ Gil clonned and took care of him. So if you think of his actions greeting his father after not seeing father for a long time.. its not that freaky~ lol

1. they were trying to destroy that Genesis so it doesn't hit earth and at the end it just hit into space.
