You really shouldnt unless the doctor gives you the ok, usually around 4 months tehy will tell you. DO NOT feed a baby cereal from a bottle this messes up the digestion because they eat it way to fast, we started giving our son baby food about a month ago and he is just now 5 months, but all babys are diffrent. On the back of the gerber cereal box it says usually when they can sit up with you supporting them, then they can start the jarred foods with the number 1 on them.

I am a nutritionist

it is too early to give her anything except breast milk or formula

anything else she cannot digest till at least 6 months and can endanger her health

Health experts and breastfeeding experts agree that it's best to wait until your baby is around six months old before offering solid foods. The American Academy of Pediatrics, the World Health Organization, and many other health organizations recommend that babies be exclusively breastfed (no cereal, juice or other foods) for the first 6 months of life. Some doctors may recommend delaying solids for the first year if there is a family history of allergies.

You sure don't want to give a 3 month old baby food from jars, just yet.

If the baby is not getting full, as my daughter wasn't, my doctor recommended giving her cereal, rice cereal for babies. Just mix it thinly into her bottle and she will fill up easier. You can get those infant feeders and mix it a little thicker; just make it with formula or breast milk. The cereal is easier to digest than food.

Food is too much for babies stomachs; and babies can also develop food allergies when given food too early in life. (which I did not know until my doc told me!)

Try the cereal first, if that doesn't help, call you pediatrician.

It is too early by medical standards, but I have also been told that it also depends on the child. Personally I'd say wait until she is able to sit well with assistance and hold her head steady on her own. I didn't begin my son on solids until about 2 weeks ago when he was just over 41/2 months old and he really loves it. I don't see the harm is giving a baby over 4 months old solids, starting with cereal of course, but I would say 3 months old is still too young.

Yes I would wait til closer to 5 or 6 months. Also I wouldn't give your child jarred food. Make you own. It's not that hard & it is so much better for your baby. Just google homemade baby food, you'll get lot's of good hits. Jarred food is so full of nasty perservatives & I wouldn't want my baby to be full of that crap. JMO though.

Edited to add 2 things

1. DOnt' waste money on a babyfood maker, just use your food processor.

2. DO not EVER put cereal ina baby's bottle. It is a choking hazard. ALso do not use a feeder bottle those are also very dangerous & can make your baby very lazy.(not wanting to eat froma spoon) If you insist on giving your daughter cereal give it to her very thin with a spoon.

Go with your instinct. I started my daughter on rice and oatmeal at 3 1/2 months and am now starting jarred food at 4 1/2 months. If she can tolerate it, go for it. She will be a more satisfied baby. Just remember to wait at least 3 days between introducing new foods to watch for food allergies.

They tell you yeah, on being to young to start...... but I have three kids all three started at different times...its really when their ready... and if they can hold it down without spitting it out or gag reflects then there ready it takes a couple of times anyways so just don't force it...try again every couple of days to see if she will take it...maybe start her off with rice cereal first...OH before u go through tons of baby jars..being that young they don't eat a whole lot..use different little bowl and a different spoon when serving your little one....so you can save the jar for later and not contaminate the baby food by using same spoon used to feed the baby(saliva )..;...and on the baby sauce good but I highly recommend not to start with fruits...made that mistake with my first was hard to get her to try veggies....I started my last little one with squash and sweet potato's its still sweet and veggie( remember introduce only one flavor a week see if any reactions occur....

3 months is too young. They are not ready to digest it, and it could cause future food allergies. Rice cereal is food too, so should be avoided as long as possible.

Babies are ready to eat solid food when they can sit up by themselves and no longer have the tongue-thrust reflex.

Your baby can get everything they need from your breastmilk or formula.
