I'm thinking of, like in the book, _Are You There, God, It's Me, Margaret_ by Judy Bloom and the scence in the movie "Big Chill" where the daughter calls from her grandparent's house(?) and is so proud. It is a milestone thing, I think--but, really, what do I know?

Actually, I think it's Judy Blume. Sorry, Judy.

I wish it had been given some recognition, it is an important milestone in a girls life. It would have been nice to do something with my sisters or my mother.

No I did not celebrate it, nor do I now celebrate it. I don't know anyone who does either.
