Our school is offering a free computer to one student. However, the computer has to be gained through winning an essay contest. The essay is simple: Write the most compelling essay about your individual need for a computer. It can be as small as only 2 paragraphs or as large as one page. I am a computer science major. All ideas welcome.

Hey people, relax. All I was asking for is ideas, not for anyone to write the essay for me so that I copy and paste!!! By the, way I am in the school library trying to finish up assignments which I never did last night because I have no computer.

Well start getting pen and paper and write it. I consider it cheating when you ask someone one on this to come up with ideas, and doing it for you to copy and paste and claim it as your own.

I think that you already have your answer. You're a science major and you have no computer!
Also consider your audience and how many others will be entering the competition - there is nothing worse than reading the same thing over and over again. Be original and throw in some thing amusing if possible. Let your personality shine through.
Apart from that I think the idea of mind mapping or making a spider diagram first is great then you can pick and choose your ideas.
Good luck.

You'll need to know the components of an essay first.
Hook> Capture their attention = quote, statement, or thought
Thesis statement
Introducing the paragraphs> Three major ideas
1st paragraph> interesting topic
2nd paragraph> least interesting topic
3rd paragraph> most interesting topic
Conclusion> rephrase your thesis statement
Clincher> Make it stick with them = quote, statement, or thought
The type of essay you are writing is important, too. English was always a tough subject for me. I hope this much helps. try to stick on topic and my English teacher used to tell the class, "If you want good marks, make me laugh or make me cry." Good luck and don't forget to proof read, proof read, and proof read. Be yourself in your essay, too. Use grammar and punctuation. Don't use words that you don't understand and keep it simple.
Another great saying from my English teacher, "Keep it simple, stupid!" She wasn't trying to be rude. Just remember K.I.S.S.

There are ways to offer advice without giving the answer, which some answers fail to see this flexibility. If your paper has a specific topic you should write about, then you should probably stick to that topic. It helps to brainstorm (come up with as many different ideas that you can on the subject), and then connect related ideas afterwards with lines or groupings (to help cluster different ideas). You can freewrite - just start writing whatever comes to mind, and filter the ideas later on. However you start to write, keep in mind who your audience is and what they're looking for. Since your paper is only one page long at most, you will probably stick to one topic and not expound on other aspects that so many long essays do. Think about who you're writing it for, what they're looking, and what the subject matter is. Maybe it helps to think of it as a sales piece, that you're trying to sell your audience on an idea. Maybe not - maybe you want to think of it as a personal reflection to be shared with others. However you approach the paper, try to enjoy the process.

i would recommend writing no shorter than 2 paragraphs
P-1....... why do you need a computer
P-2........what would you do if you had a computer [make it something the schools want to hear like use it to do essay and project research dont stress to a level where it is hard to believe]

Tony's answers are good but his grammar is less than perfect. I point this out not to condemn him but ,rather, as a reminder to write with style and grace. Once you've written your essay, let someone else critique it. Use their advice to tighten up any weak areas and make improvements. Best of luck to you!!

Well, you probably have a computer if you are on answers. Maybe there is someone who can't afford one that needs one. Don't be greedy. But, maybe you don't have one. If that's the case I think you should do the essay on your own. Only you know what to say, we don't even know you.

you have a very reasonable reason why the school should give you the computer...you dont have one to even do your homework!if the school even cared for the grades you made then this is a good reason for it!
