My 1 week old daughter has not gained any weight..She is exclusivly breastfed, meaning no formula supplement, and nurses up to 15 times a day, sometimes more. She does not nurse for more than 5 min without falling asleep, so I do pump breast milk and will bottle feed her this or allow her daddy to feed her..Should she have gained any weight by now, or I am just being overly worried?
Its been a while since I have had a baby, and I just don't remember!

I do nurse her in only her diaper, I also sometimes wipe her down with a cool bathcloth, which ticks her off, but hey, it keeps her awake! I thought I was just being overly worried, but isnt that what Mommies are supposed to do?I plan on breastfeeding her a MINIMUM of 6-8 months. We will see how she does when those little razor teeth come in :)

Your baby is only a week old. Experts don't worry about their weight unless they're still not up to their birth weight at 2 weeks of age, assuming they're having adequate wet and dirty diapers and aren't acting listless. Baby should be having at least 5 wet diapers a day and should be pooping 3-4 times a day. Baby should also be sucking vigorously at the breast. I've included websites that should help ease your mind in these confusing early weeks.

When my daughter was borned, she was 5lb 7oz. She was 5lb when she was released from hospital. My daught had the same problem that she does not nurse for more than a few minute before falling asleep. Her weight was accually decreasing for the first 5 days, and start to gain weight after the following steps we have done.

The disadvantage about breast feeding is you don't know how much the baby has actually taken. And for the first couple days, the mother might not product enough breast milk unless the baby keep stimalate the mother.
Other one is, it is hard for baby to have be breast feed than bottle.

So my wife bump breast milk and top up with formula to make sure my daught can have 2 oz for every two hours. We had doing this for 48 hours without any sleep. And she start to gain weight and has more energy to stay awake for breast feeding.
I think you case is better, good luck and don't give up feeding her. Because one of the reason she is keep falling asleep might be she does not eat enough.

Don't worry newborn baby's usually lose weight during the first week, so if she's maintaned her discharge weight than that's good and don't forget that not all scales read the same. As long as she looks pink and bright and is having wet nappies I really don't think there's anything to worry about. To get her to breast feed more than 5 minutes at a time don't wrap her while feeding and stroke her awake when u can see her dosing off. If she falls asleep burp her and give her some more.

Be patient. She only lost 2 oz. at birth and that's pretty good. For all you know she was weighed pre-dirty diaper the first time, and post-dirty diaper the 2nd time. When you're so small even 1-2 oz in a diaper makes a difference.
If she's still the same weight when she's 2-3 weeks it might be concerning, but that's what doctors are for. :)

Dont worry too much about it unless she was underweight to begin with. Babies usually do drop a few ounces after they are born, but dont fret she will slowly start to gain her weight. She is so new that its alot of hard work to to keep sucking and sucking they need breaks in between. Try nursing her just in a diaper, no blanket or tickle her to try to keep her awake. I urge to to keep breastfeeding for as long as you can.

Usually babies lose some weight right after birth. Since she is at her birth weight, she may have lost weight and gained it back. If she still weighs the same at two weeks old, then I would worry.

It completely normal for babies to weigh the same at 1-2 weeks as they did at birth. It's after that they should start gaining...if she doesn't then that's when you can start to worry.

If she's only a week old, I wouldn't worry yet! How do you know she hasn't gained? Home scales aren't that accurate unless you have a baby one. I'm sure she'll be visiting the doctor soon, so just ask him when you go.

No need to panic though.

My sister breastfed her children. She had to nurse them only wearing their diaper to keep them a bit chilled to stay awake.
This may help. Most babies gain a pound to 2 pounds a month. If your concerned contact your Doctor.

She sounds like she is being well fed by you and in the best way. I would definately consult the doctor for their feedback, but my guess is that she is just fine. Best wishes to ya!! GaryT
