help to even out competition

A salary cap would definitely even out the playing field and you wouldn't see the Yankees in the playoffs every year, but the competition is pretty good. Smaller market teams like St. Louis, Cincinnati, Minnesota and Oakland are in the playoff hunt this season. The absence of a salary cap allows the huge market teams to buy the best talent and make a lot of mistakes that the smaller market teams can't. The smaller market teams have to be better at scouting and negotiating as well as evaluating talent.

Yes... but at the same time there needs to be a minimum payroll as well.

The cheapskates are probably more responsible for the talent pool collecting in a only a few spots than the spend happy owners.

Here's something to ponder... George Steinbrenner pays out almost $200 million in payrool but STILL makes money each and every year. If baseball limits his payroll... how rich will he become during the rest of his lifetime?

But if you're gonna put a cap in, you better do it BEFORE the new Yankee Stadium opens, George is building with his own money... so, once it opens... he'll make all the ban off of each ticket and luxury box.

Nice $10 million investment those Yankees were back in the 70s, huh?

I guess... when it comes right down to it... I'd rather see the players get the money as opposed to the owners.

No, I like it just the way it is now. Teams can go over the luxury tax limit, but they have to pay. I would like to see the amount they pay raised, because it doesn't seem to be hurting the big clubs as much as it should. But the small-market teams benefit from the luxury tax because they get extra revenue whenever someone goes over, which is what they need. If there is a hard cap, they don't get any extra money. What baseball needs is a salary FLOOR, where a team has to spend a minimum amount of money to play.

Besides, the players won't agree to a hard cap. I would rather have the current situation than have a strike or something.

No. Evening out the competition is not a good thing. It doesn't make for a group of talented teams battling it out for playoff spots, it makes for a bunch of mediocre teams flailing their way towards the post season. Like the NL this year.

Now, I could definitely get behind MLB doing something to make the luxury tax system useful, but I really don't want to see a cap. The last thing we want MLB to become is the NFL.

Of course! There will still be talented teams as you can see in the NFL. And there will still be teams that stay consistantly good on a year to year basis such as the Patriots and Eagles (until last year). Many players are willing to settle for less cash to be on a winning team and thus more talented teams emerge. But there will not be any teams that will win the division for decades strait. When a team stops winning championships, the players will want more cash to play there. If you need convincing then go to the baseball hall of fame and go to the current team section. When you look at the number of world series that teams have (many have zero) and then look at the yankees section, you'll feel bad that baseball has come to this.

I think there should be a salary cap in baseball without question. Baseball players are getting paid way to much now n days.

Hack yah George.S the Yankee owner has tons of money and can offer for the good players he wants like Sheild, A-Rod, Abreu, Randy.J, Pavano, Damon, This way all the teams have the same amont money to spend.

YES! Then the Yankees won't go on another 26 World Series titles streak! I like even competition like you said.

Yes. There are more reasons to do so though. The average family can't even afford to go to a game!

No, I love to see Steinbrenner waste all those millions for nothing.
