Make sure he's eating really healthily and is in good shape. He can't run if he's not physically able.
1 - your horse needs to go, but don't teach him the only way to ride is to run. that's miserable when all your horse wants to do is canter.
2 - make sure you're actively moving to. don't sit there sleeping and expect him to run. when you're asking for a canter 1, DON'T post, 2, push up with your stomach muscles, kiss, squeeze, and move your body as if you were cantering.
3 - go easy on the spurs. you don't want him to think of running because you're punishing him. they are okay... but the minute you take them off then your horse has no respect. i personally prefer for the horse to respect me, not the spurs. and they can hurt the horse.
4 - i dislike this too, but consider a crop. they actually don't hurt the horse. often if you even slap your leg the noise will make them move. well, don't sit there beating your horse, but often one firm tap will be enough.
5 - make sure your horse will canter just in an normal circle well too. he may just be overwhelmed about the barrels and not want to canter. gradually work up patterns with more complicity and turning.
6 - when asking for a canter, first ask, then tell, then command.
7 - try parelli's seven games. they help with a lot of stuff. his website is http://www.parelli.com
8 - some horses are naturally slower horses. appreciate that your horse doesn't run off with you, and be willing to realize he may not be the right horse for barrels.

hi my name is bailey and im going to give you a full thought out answer , i do not just answer questions for the points i really wan to help you... on you will probaly need some spurs to mak ehim faster, but do not hit him to hard the first couple times let him get used to it or you will go for a flying ride(get bucked off). lightly touch him then a little but harder and tell him to trot then harder and begin to canter then gallop ..do not do barrels the first time you try the spurs there will be to much going on, after you got him fast you can improve your skills by everytime you go around a barrel look up at the next barrell and that will help you

long lead ropes would be a plus so you can swing them around to hit him in the butt with them

good luck and i hope i helped
i think my answer is very thought put and i do not really like answers that people copy and paste from websites that takes hte whole reason away from yahoo answers

You should use spurs to give it a squeeze on the belly especially when going around the barrels. I have read that leaning to the front may throw the horse off balance, but I'm not 100% sure.Hope that helps:)

Use spurs if you need to. I have to sometimes on my horse. Lean forward a little bit in the saddle too

from a friend of mine that runs, she told me when I was working my horse, NEVER walk the pattern. You can slow trot, but if you walk, that tells the horse it's ok to walk it when you want to run.
