i have a sony vaio desktop computer and i want to reformat it so it is like BRAND NEW. not just to restart it or temporarily do whatever. i want absolutley NOTHING on it. just what comes when you buy it brand new.

You can't format the hard disk from within Windows. Boot off of a bootable floppy disk that has the fdisk and format on it. There are also disk wipers available on the Internet that you can boot from and they will wipe your hard drive as clean as you can get it.

Dariks Boot and Nuke is one of these programs.

Go to START, RUN, COMMAND, FORMAT. Ignore all of the warnings that say you are about to do some serious damage to stored info. But first make sure that you have the original Windows CD for the adding back of the operating system or you just made it into a great new paper weight.

Start up the windows xp disk in the cd rom and reformat the hdd and reinstall windows.

There is usually a link for restoring it to the original factory settings. I just looked, its called "Vaio Recovery Wizard" mine is a pop up from the start button....you can email me if you are having a problem with it though.

Um...brand new...means the sw that it came with..
FoRMAT is no sw of any kind other than filesystem (NTSC or Fatx).


define which:
If former, u should or be able to get the cd's for restore.
if not, u can format or use WINDOWS CD to wipe out and install whole new system.
