It's pretty easy.

You first heat Limestone in a kiln to convert the CaCO3 into CaO and CO2 gas. Once you have the CaO, which is commonly called lime, quick lime, or also staked lime, you mix it with carbon black and put it into an electric arc furnace that can generate temperatures of 2000 to 2100 degrees Celsius. The CaO and the carbon react to form carbon monoxide and Calcium Carbide.

The formula is:

CaO + 3C --> CaC2 + CO

I've used quite a bit of Calcium carbide in my explorations of the Caves in Florida. I've been in about every cave above water in Florida, including the largest cave, Warren's Cave, which is just northwest of Gainesville, FL, just west of I-95. I've been all the way to the end of the cave, the sand room. Fascinating. And I used an acetylene light to light my way. Acetylene is generated by dropping water onto Calcium Carbide.
