I felt really bad for everyone there when it happened.
And I still feel bad for those who lost loved ones,
But at this point, I think the only people who havent' gotten on with their lives were the former residents of "welfare heaven" who are just angry that the jig is up.

If I came out of that one with my life and the lives of my family in tact. I would NOT be complaining. Every day would be a party.

Some funny comments: "If your lucky you'll own your own house" ? So you think the people who owned their own home and paid for flood insurance were lucky? How about responsible?
Yes it was welfare heaven. It's called a "You owe me" mentality. Those are the people who never tried to bootstrap themselves and the ones who are complaining now. Yeah, the same ones that are causing a crime wave right now in Dallas. And the very same ones the media feels sorry for. I'm freakin' sick of it.
Sure there are people who did everything right and ended up in a bad way. No worse than my neighbor who hit a deer and died - stuff happens, and It's not them I'm referring to. It's those people who deserved my Salvation Army donation.
What about the success stories? What about the people who made it elsewhere and got themselves back on their feet? Do you hear of them? No. its all a blame game.
Discrimination!!?? Give me a break! It was a black run city in a politically liberal state.

Intentional- If it was temporary for you then you should be livid at the people who purpously live in it on a permanent basis while you pay for them to do so. Congrats. You did the right thing it's there for circumstances like yours. That's not the issue.

Mr. Wizard - We GAVE - of our taxes, our donations our time. FEMA failed them and especially the corrupt bureaucracies in LA failed them. I'm tired of the guilt trip being laid on by the media and the cry of racism. Especially since most people who are responsible - would have A- left before this went down or B- gotten their lives back together. Again their are people who DID play by the rules and fell through the cracks. Sorry, but that's not racism or lack of caring on our part, but CORRUPTION.

I AM SO SICK OF: NEW ORLEANS, THIS NEW ORLEANS THAT, FEMA THIS, FEMA DIDNT DO THAT. I live in Louisiana and I havent heard a word about RITA ever since it hit almost a year ago (Sept 25, 2005). Problem is when you have a welfare city and people have been bored, raised and taken advantage of the system, ALL YOU HEAR IS BITCHIN BITCHIN BITCHIN about crap. Thats why it make good television cause alot of people ***** about the same thing.....KATRINA
You know when its bad when you look up the road and see the Mississippi River levee and then you look down the road and it keeps going downward. Bowls arent good places to setup anything.

Keep in mind that someday you will also be retired and living on social security (if it still exists). If you are lucky, you will also own your own house. If not, you'll be renting in a not-so-nice neighborhood. Social security does not pay for nice places.
When that day comes, you had better pray that no disaster comes your way. One of the things we've learned from Katrina is the elderly and the poor will get the least amount of assistance from the government.
Yes, I'm tired of hearing about Katrina. I'm tired of hearing about people who want to rebuild on the same doomed land. At the same time I'm aware that those who are still waiting for help in rebuilding are not the renters who had nothing invested in the houses that were destroyed, but people who had worked hard to buy that house and had little or no savings. They can't rebuild and they can't move on. They have nothing to move on with.

Louisiana Governor Blanco and fellow state representatives are highly concerned, with good reason, that eventually their state will be forgotten by the US and world; left financially "high and dry" and be further overwhelmed with evolving domino effect negative consequences born by Katrina's hellish wrath.
They're keeping Katrina woes alive for that reason--and it's NO picnic for Louisiana / Mississippi residents to read or see Katrina, Katrina,Katrina....each dam day for this first year, either.
These people, to some greater or other degree, have major Katrina aftermath issues overloading their plate as it stands.
The United States is SUPPOSED to be exactly that: United, where ALL it's residents nationwide TOGETHER focus on what needs doing POSITIVELY to help one state in need rebound fully after having experienced a major painful crippling event like Katrina. Is the UNITED STATES what it's supposed to be.....or is the reality glaringly present each state is out to look after it's own???
The UNITED STATES came to be out of sheer defiance, where people took a stand against an oppressive nation "across the pond (Alantic Ocean) sought to take over a new land and subject people to horrendous brutal mideval like rule. We prevailed and did it twice when other European countries that banded together tried to steal ownership of our country.
Well, the battlefield is Katrina hell ravaged Louisiana and Mississippi. Can people of the other 48 states in defiant spirit UNITE and go to these two states en masse and contribute financially or physically and HELP restore these seriously injured two states....and acheive a rebuild goal in far shorter time????
Yes: I believe such IS possible.....but WILL it be done so we won't have to hear about "Katrina, Katrina, Katrina" for years onwards???????
So who wins: Apathy (Katrina) or The United States????

While you are hearing about KATRINA, KATRINA (as you put it)
Are you listening? It isn't just about the actually flood, or the loss of hundreds of people. It's about the politics that are questionable now, the concern that there has been enough time to repair damaged levee, it's about misappropriation of funds and financial discrimination. Your question is pretty inhumane and very uninformed, I hope some of the people who are having to live this nightmare don't have the misfortune to read a question like this and realize that there are people out there that think that lives, homes, health and security can be reaccomplished in a years time. You should be ashamed, I hope you are never met with a natural disaster that is beyond your control because you simply do not have the tools or maturity that it takes to overcome it.

No I'm not. We need to keep it in the news so people won't forget that those people are still suffering and need help. And what the hell is "welfare heaven"...spoken just like a person who hasn't walked a mile in the shoes of someone who has been a welfare recipient. Believe me there's nothing heavenly about trying to live off $235 a month in income based housing feeling like you're trapped and you just can't get ahead. I've been there but thankfully it was temporary. I went to college, graduated and am now happily employed in a respected position in my community. I hope that I am a role model and I don't judge others by what I think I know. Don't be so quick to turn your nose up because you never know how your life will be later on.

No Im just tired of the problems of Katrina not being fixed as a patriotic American and making everyone suffer there for the sins of a few will not do! So get a grip on your attitude. We dont punish everyone because we didnt do our job to control the fraud.

Looks like Katrina might be upstaged with what's fixing to hit Florida right now. You might get tired of hearing about that one instead.'

They are going on and on about it. It is sad that it happened and since I lived in Louisiana for 18 yeas I do miss all that the storm destroyed. They should drop it though. They can help more but just not make it public every time. It is almost like the are showing off now every time a big guy in the gov does a good deed.

No one liked Katrina. I just wonder why all the people who were devastated in New Orleans want to rebuild there? For God sake, below sea level is not a good idea!?!?

Yes when you listen to the news and hear about the way all the money that was donated only 60to65 percent actually went to non profit organization that were true organizations and the rest of the money went to the non profit organizations that kept the money and were never heard from again. They cant even track down which organizations they are. True it is sad that a awfull thing like that happened but enough is enough. Awfull things happen every day yes give it a rest.
