I want to record HBO and other premium/digital channels on my PC. I have a Hauppauge video capture card.
Can I just connect the S-Video from the set-top box to the s-video on the card? What kind of quality will I get?
I would like to record some shows and movies from HBO (and other channels) and then watch them again on my 42" plasma, using my computer as the recorded, not any other DVR or device.

Thanks.

You do NOT need Media Center, you only need XP, and the drivers for your Hauppauge TV tuner. You'll need two S-video cords long enough to reach your computer; one for input, one for output. That's all that's needed.

The Hauppage cards can do that for you- they also come with software which allows you computer to act as a DVR...

You only need Media Center if you bought a MCE (Media center Edition) card.

You could also try Yahoo's Go! TV beta, which provides show listings and schedules in addition- it just depends upon exactly which Hauppage card you've got- only a few capture cards are supported currently.

You need to have a computer that is going to be able to connect to you cable connection. Most like you are going to need Windows XP Media Center Edition and a TV tuner.

That would work but don't forget that some programs will not record. Premium content has encryption embedded into the program so that you cannot record it unless you have special equipment from cable/satellite services.

in case you connect it like that, you will get S-Video decision, it relatively is below HD, yet nonetheless notably solid. you may could desire to have an HDMI or DVI output to get greater efficient decision than that. Your set suitable container won't deliver the sign out to the laptop unscrambled, however. I checklist over- the-air HD with my laptop.

Cross posting is something I intensely dislike. It fragments posts as people answering questions that have already been covered in the other section.
