don't listen to none of the other answers trust me they don't work I've tried them all before go to start them programs then accessories then system tools then disk defrag and click it when it pops up click defrag on it (just look for it on the pop up thing) then it will bring up a bunch of lines (it takes a second) there will be green ones blue ones and red ones the red ones are fragmented files (viruses) and the green ones are system files and the blue ones are contiguous files (good files) well the defrag will take all the red files( viruses ) and get rid of them your computer will run hella faster plz try it and let me prove to you how good it works well hope this helps :)

limewire is good but it is very easy to download a virus with it so be carefull. also limewire was written in java which slows down the pc while it is running so try not to have it running while youre not using it. viruses and spyware adware etc can slow your pc down bigtime so like the other answers suggest make sure you scan your pc with lots of different antivirus anti-adware etc programs. also a cluttered registry will slow your pc down so try to get a program like 'registry mechanic'. also uninstall any programs from your pc that you dont use any more.and defrag your hard drive regularly. if you follow these steps about once a week it should keep your pc working relatively fast.one last thing: on limewire, if youre downloading programs, right click the program in the search results first before you download then click advanced and then click 'bitzi lookup' this will usually tell you if the program is a virus or not before you have downloaded it. hope this helps.

CTRL-ALT-DEL -> Task Manager -> Processes
Click on the CPU heading twice, is there something using a lot of CPU? Over 10 is going to have an impact.
Either tell me what it is, or do a search on the internet for that process and remove the offending program. Chances are, it probably is Limewire, it's a bit of a CPU hog.

Hello,
most likely you have alot of spyware and malware maybe even viruses. Go here free.grisoft.com
Download Ewido and AVG they are free scanners. Install them and then run the programs. This will delete any programs that are slowing your computer down that do not need to be there. Good luck.

The fewer programs you havve loading on startup the better. It will slow down startup i all your programs load. All you need are Windows and your security software.
Defragmenting your pc is a good idea, but wouldn't explain why your pc has suddenly slowed.
If you're going to use Limewire safely you need to do 2 things. You need to beef up your security, including with Avast! anti virus, because it scans incoming files over P2P networks.
And you must get Windows to show file extensions. It hides them by default. If you think you are downloading a music file, check that it has the file extension .mp3; not .exe or .mp3.exe. A dot exe is an executable file, not a music file.
To force Windows to show file extensions, log on as administrator and open My Documents. Click Tools - folder options then select the View tab. Untick 'hide extensions for known file types', then apply and ok it.
After that you should be able to see the file extensions.
Download and install Avast, Ewido, Ad-Aware SE Personal and run them. If they find anything that shouldn't be there you may need to switch off System Restore and reboot in safe mode to run the scans again.
Before attempting to remove malware you must switch off System Restore as back up files will be hiding in there, and it will just restore itself. Go to Start - programs - accessories - system tools - system restore.
You should then run Avast and Ewido in Safe Mode. To get into Safe Mode repeatedly press the F8 key after the bios screen loads but before Windows loads. You'll know if you made it because the screen will be at 800 x 600 and your pc will be slow.

Sounds Like spyware or possibly a virus from one of the files that you downloaded from limewire. Run ad-aware and your virus scanner and see what comes up.

First, uninstall LimeWire. That's most likely your problem. Go to Start->Settings->Control Panel->Ad/Remove Programs, select Lime Wire and click Remove. Then go and get these programs and run them:

Also, I recommend ditching Norton anything, or McfAfee anything (except for SiteAdvisor), and replacing them with AVG antivirus. It's free of charge and works great.

is there a little limewire icon at the bottom right of the screen, it'll be tiny?
then right click and quit it.
limewire slows computers down and has a 'open at startup' function.
