Most common damage is not enough fluids.
Change the oil at 3K intervals regardless of use.
Keep your car's other fluids at the right levels and change out the old rotten burnt stuff when its too old like most people ignore.

Engine oil
Engine coolant
Brake fluid
Steering fluid
Transmission fluid
Transmission filter
Differential oil

Your vehicle's user manual has a scheduled maintenance chart.

you can start by knowing how the engine sounds when its running normal so you can detect when something is wrong. Check and change oil reguarly. Get a manual on how to repair your car and read up. Just some small stuff...

Thats your hubby's problem. Only thing I remember is to tell him when 3,000 miles has gone by so he can change my oil.
