What is the absolute scariest movie you have ever seen and why?

I have watched scary movies all my life! I LOVE THEM! The scariest movie I have ever seen is "The Grudge". I don't know what I was expecting when I started watching it but....man....what I got was way more than that! It was great!

Nope...not young at all. I have a soon to be 18 year old son and a soon to be 16 year old daughter.....and I've seen The Exorcist and Amityville and all of the Halloween movies....and Nightmare...and Friday 13th....but for some reason the Grudge just really got to me! I loved it....

Also worth mentioning are Rose Red and The Ring. Just recently watched the remake of the Fog (which the original absolutely terrified me as a child) and it was much better than the original in my mind. I watched Jaws and Piranha in my 4th grade year (shhhh telling my age here) and was terrified of water if I couldn't see the bottom of it....hmmmmm that explains alot actually!

There is a scene in the original 1963 The Haunting, in which the paranormal investigators of an old mansion have bedded for the night. There is an horrendous thumping in the corridor, that stops just outside the door of two women, then starts again. It seems to go on forrever. When it finally ends, Julie Harris says to Claire Bloom: "I could never have got through that, if you hadn't been holding my hand." And Bloom is several feet away in her own bed, and says, "I wasn't holding your hand." Try to beat that, CGI

If you think The Grudge is the scariest movie ever you must be really young. Try watching some old school horror like Amityville(the original), the Exorcist, Texas Chainsaw, or Halloween. Much better than the grudge will ever be. even more recently watch The Ring. Much scarier.

Preface: I didn't consider 'The Grudge' frightening, because it was basically a haunted house story set in another country.

1. Psycho. Anyone who's ever seen it remembers it as they shower.

2. Halloween. Michael Myers was absolutely terrifying & unstoppable. Also, the music created false alarms at points in the movie to create extreme tension.

3. Texas Chainsaw Masacre (old & new version). A psychopathic homicidal family with a history of genetic anomalies mentally. Peaceful looking home, but a morgue to visit.

4. Saw II. Very disturbing scenes, but you can't stop watching. I like to watch the director's comments at the end — how they achieved effects, what they were trying to achieve in a particular scene.

5. Basic Instinct II. Totally different take from the first, set in England, and I think much better. Be sure to listen to the director's comments at the end — it will surprise you.

6. Carrie. Extreme religion, peer cruelty, telekinetic powers — snap & see what happens.

I've always thought that the original "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" (1974) is the scariest movie I've ever seen. It was so well done on such a small budget. It's so creepy because it's probably one of the only "real" horror movies ever made. Everything in that movie could really happen. The "Leatherface" character was taken from the Plainfield, WI serial killer and grave robber, Ed Gein. Then again, so was Norman Bates from "Psycho" and Buffalo Bill from "Silence of the Lambs". TCM isn't as gory or bloody as it's name implies, yet it is absolutely chilling when you watch it.

When I was younger, the Nightmare on Elm Street series freaked me out. The Ring really got to me. But probably the scariest reaction I've had was to Sixth Sense. It got to me so badly because of my spiritual beliefs. If you believe in that sort of thing, you watch it with a completely different perspective.

I would have to say "The Exorcist." I was three when that movie came out and my mother actually took me to the drive-in to see it! I was scarred for YEARS!! And even to this day if I watch it, it can give me nightmares, especially that levitating scene and when Regan starts talking in tongues...but don't get me wrong, outside of that, I still LOVE horror flicks! I love Stephen King's work.

For me it is "The Shining" not overly gory but filled with suspense and tension. Stephen King wrote it, Stanley Kubric directed with good old Jack Nicholsen in the lead. A must see scary movie.

I don't know about "scariest"... it means too many things. A roller coaster is scary, but not in the same way that being lost in an abandoned mine is scary. "Carnival of Souls" (1956, I think...) is really creepy. "Dawn of the Dead" (both the original and re-make) are great, if somewhat revolting.
