There is no answer as all Anti-Virus software has different pros and con's. I recommend searching "GigaFide anti virus" on YouTube as he does a summary of each one. I personally use AVG Free 2009. Also getting Linux will prevent more Viruses than a Windows machine however Linux does get viruses too - it's just that many Viruses are designed for Windows. Hope I helped! Ben.

For Free? AVG Anti-Virus is the best! I have used AVG to remove many, many viruses from computers. It has not failed me yet. Also, I can honestly say that I have never had a virus infection while running AVG (as long as the virus definitions were up-to-date).

Here is an entire list of free anti-virus software including a link to AVG - http://www.vermontpcsolutions.com/tools_anti_virus.html

Don't bother with Symantec and McAfee!!!

Kaspersky Antivirus has the highest detection and removal rate of any antivirus based on the tests I've seen.

Norton and Mcafee are the most popular, but they are massive resource hogs that will horribly slow down your machine. Mcafee can't catch anything so don't ever use it.

Avast is a great free antivirus, but on the tests I've seen it catches around 82% whereas Kaspersky caught 97%.

I tried a demo of Kaspersky and the auto-updater was crap. It had alot of problems and I don't like manually downloading updates myself.

I personally use Avast. It's easy to use, very effective, and doesn't hog system resources.

Unless you have very risky internet habits you shouldn't need the god of all antiviruses. Remember, the biggest threat to a computer sits behind the keyboard.

EDIT: Ignore the guy who said to run three Antivirus programs simultaneously. That's just asking for trouble. Antivirus programs do not like each other and cause conflicts in your system.

AVG is the best

why did i say it the best
bcoz i was using Norton av but Norton let the virus get in to my pc make my pc free n shut down / restart by itself, than i download Mcafee av is found some Trojans n improve the the pc speed a bit not to let the virus shut down the pc by itself, but still freeze some time.
finally my friend recommend AVG av and it just work well ever by catch 2 more Trojan horse with AVG Free edition.

The *best* anti-virus? Run an operating system that isn't as vulnerable to them in the first place. MacOS X is a lot mroe resistant, and most LInux and *BSD systems are incredibly invulnerable to viruses. There's only a limited amount that *ANY* anti-virus can do to protect Windows - partly because most of them are reactive - the can only block stuff the vendor has seen (which is why you can get nailed by a virus before the next update comes out).

Other operating systems believe in proactive security - setting things up *beforehand* to make things tough for malware writers.

AVG can be used with NORTON without any problem. Avast can be used along with these, it only displays a message during start up. I am telling you this because I am ussing all three of these together at once with out any problem. This combination is the BEST antivirus program for past 6.5 months. Trust ME.

As far as I know there not even a 45% effective spyware protection.
