Should be respected as long as both of them have made that decision together

Should be respected! There are many valid reasons for people who love each other not to have children.

Try asking your question another way:
Couples who choose to have lots children.. selfish or their own choice which should be respected?

As an example, excess children can put a stress on society when parents can't take care of them. Just because they want a big family shouldn't mean others have to help take care of them (increased taxes for schools as an example).

I think there's no way you can think a person selfish for not having kids. Who are they taking away from? A person that doesn't exist? This isn't even abortion. There's nothing to abort.

If anything, couples that don't have kids end up contributing to society in general without getting direct benefit of their own. That sounds very unselfish to me.

My husband and I are a couple who have chosen not to have children. I think it is pretty SELFLESS not selfish! It would be selfish of us to have children and not to be in the best situation to take care of them in the way they should be. We realize that we enjoy traveling, etc. when we want to do it. We would not be able to do that if we had kids. At least we realize this before we had children! That is more than I can say for so many couples who go ahead and have the kids and realize that they made a huge mistake!

some couples have their own reasons why not to have children. It has nothing to do with selfishness. Any choice or decision should be respected.

Religiously (Catholic-christian) it's selfishness! but personally I don't agree with that at all! Initially one has to consider if the family is ready to receive a new member in the family and if the environment is good. I don't think that anyone can ever force me to have a baby even if that's how it's supposed to be, I'd rather go against my religion than conceive a baby and later realise it was a mistake, since I want the best for my children

Why is it selfish not to have children ?

There are some who live in conditions too awful to raise children in.

There are some that no sane society should ever let raise children.

There are some that are doomed by genetic fates to raise the short-lived and the afflicted.

But it's all personal choice isn't it.

There is no test before becoming a parent, no exam you have to take, no course of study that is mandatory.

I do not think not having kids is being selfish at all. Now I do think it is selfish to have children without wanting them and not able to take care of them. Do not feel bad because there is nothing bad with not having children.

Definately to be respected, too many children are born and abandoned and not loved any way so respect to those that choose not to have any children. Its a free world after all,

How could that be considered as selfish? If they do not think they want children for whatever reason then aren't they doing the right thing by not having them? Selfish is these dumb *** little hefers popping them out left and right and not taking care of them and leaving the tax payers to support them.

Why is someone selfish if they dont want to have kids ???? I dont and probably never will. Why does that make me selfish ? Because I didn't chose to put myself in the hell others did ?? You chose to have them, good for you but why would you label me selfish ? I think there are more selfish parents around. They have kids they cant take care of. Now that is selfish.

Depends on the reason. If it is because kids would get in the way of their social life then it is selfish but if it is because the child wouldn't have a good life then they should be respected.
