I always walk to my car with my keys held in a clinched fist. Your car key sticking out makes a good weapon. I am always aware of what and who is around me. I always check my back seat before I get in my car. If you have automatic locks wait to you are almost there to unlock them. Then lock the doors before you do anything else. Put your seat belt on and start your car after the doors are locked. Avoid dimly lite areas and keep your cell phone at the ready. Pepper spray and zappers are nice but not legal in many states. Another good idea is to use the buddy system if possible.

don't look like you have any money, and stay in motels that have 24 hour security. I lost my life savings and almost lost my life this way when I moved to Florida, the druggies are everywhere ! They all have guns too !

stay to yourself, be alert, and set boundries such as not letting people know much about you or your family until you feel that comfortability. don't believe in instant comfortability, give new acquaintances a certain amount of space to see how they really are, before you call them friends.
