both instant messaging and text messaging allow people to connect to eachother quickly and informally. text messaging is done with phones while instant messaging is usually done through computers (although most smartphones have the capability to do so)

instant messaging costs usually consists mainly of internet provider cost (none if you use a public terminal) and text messaging is usually charged per text or in a packaged deal.

Have you used either?

Instant messaging is a form of "conversation" had by two people who are both on line, most often sitting a desks with computers in front of them.

Text messaging uses wireless telephone devices to send short messages from one "phone" to another.

Similarities:
-Both means of getting a message to someone without speaking.
-Both require you to type

Differences:
-Use a phone for one and a computer for the other.
-IM you need to connect to the Internet, text you do not.
-Get a message to someone via text faster than IM because for an IM you have to wait until they are online.
-For an IM don't you need to both have the same subscriber (Yahoo, AOL, etc.) and text it doesn't matter (Cingular phones can text Sprint, Verizon, etc.) Perhaps I am wrong on this point, not too keen on the IM world!
