How about a third option...."Same as it ever was."
For those who think that the world is just so much worse than it used to be, note that, in 1900, over 6,000 people died in the Galveston Hurricane. Many more thousands died of epidemics every year in that time.
In WWII we dropped nuclear bombs on Japan, a move which was seen as LESS horrific than continuing to fight a conventional war with Japan.
For three decades, only the threat of mutual destruction kept the Soviet Union and the U.S. from using nuclear arms again.
Millions of people were systematically killed in Hitler's Germany and Stalin's USSR.
In the 1970's Pol Pot and his regime decimated Cambodia, killing millions. Many South American and Central American countries have had years of oppression.
I won't even talk about the "Cultural Revolution of China" (70's, I believe), or the hundreds of thousands killed in Rwanda, or the Balkans in the 90's.
So, to say things are so much worse than ever before is really just ignorance of what has happened for years and years.
Are things better now? In many respects, YES. In some respects, no. I wouldn't think that, as humans, we're going to change drastically in the next few years, either. So I can't go with this "new world order" business either.

Two steps foreward, one step back..
We are bumbling our way along about as well as we can...
We seem to be in the midst of a backward step at the moment
