The spanish inqusition occured in the late 15th (1400s) and early 16th centurys. It was to rid spain of heritics. These were animists, protestants and jews. There were several things that could happen to you for being a heritic, from public humiliation and repentance to immolation. There was a festival called the "Auto de fey" in which the collected heretics would be paraded ritually in public and punished. It culminated in the burning at the stake of the worst heretics. The priests present would attempt to get the heretics to repent right up to the point that they were actually on fire.
The lead Inquisitor and most infamous was Torquemada (sp?)
