Dorthy asked to go home, the Scarecrow asked for a brain, the Lion asked for courage and the Tinman asked for a heart. This although Dorthy had been wearing her way home all during the movie, and each of the characters had shown they had these things and virtues they were going to Oz to get all the time. I think Baum was saying that we all have these virtures but we need validation of our having them.
