There are two things I like to say there Its because people here dont have any other sport to cheer about,I mean if India qualifies for football WC or if India wins Olympic gold in field hockey for example, I really doubt if people would be watching cricket.Love for cricket is just a poor substitute to hide from showing our love to other sports where Indians love watching but Indians dont have "India" to cheer about. Second is "Do Indians really love cricket?" If that was the case that test matches should be jam packed and we should have reasonable crowd in Ranji Trophy matches. Our people love our cricketers more than the game. They are seen as celebrities and form a part of the star culture where an Individual occupies a "larger than life"image I beg to differ that cricket is the only game that requires intelligence,if you notice sports like soccer,it also has a lot of thinking, strategy, planning and execution. If soccer is all brawn and no brain then a team like Spain which is considered to be one of the less built sides, would not have been World Champs

Because England used to rule India and introduced Cricket to the Indians.

Pakistan split off from India and they enjoy Cricket too.

India and Pakistan now play in Cricket tournaments against countries like England and Australia.

Indians are specialists in wasting time. We are happy in playing a match, which takes 5 days to give a result. But the people who invented cricket with legal rules (british) concentrate mostly on football, which is just 2hr game.

i know a person, who bunks his college, whenevr India plays match. He used to waste the entire day for ODI. however, He used to waste only 2 or 3 days for test match.Bcoz, he will see while India bat. ;)
