There is no remaining dollar.
The trick here is how much does the cashier have.
That is the cashier has $70 at the end. They guys paid $72. So the real question is - where is the $2 between what the guys paid ($72) and what the cashier has ($70).
Obviously this is what the waiter has.
This is one of those fun - lets mix up two equation problems. They are always fun and do a great job of tricking the mind.
So first transaction - pay 75. Cashier only takes 70. the 3 Guys each get 1 back and waiter gets 2. So 70+3+2=75
Second transaction is that they have only paid 72. 70 to cashier and 2 to waiter. So 70+2=72
So alas, there is no missing dollar.
I guess maybe further explanation would help. Is that the line "that is 24X3=72 & 2 dollars are in the waiters pocket. The total becomes 74" is simply worng and where everything gets offtrack. It is true that 24X3=72 but you subtract (not add) the $2 in the waiters pocket. Which gives you 70$ - which is exactly what the cashier has.
Cheers.

The $24 they each paid INCLUDES the money in the waiter's pocket. The total is $72 paid, less $2 in the waiter's pocket means they paid $70 for the meals. The cashier received $75, less $5 discount, is the same: $70.

There is no remaining dollar.
Look at it another way.
Originally the bill was $75. They were then given a $5 discount which then brings the bill to $70. The waiter gave $1 each to the three men for a total of $3 and kept the other $2 for himself. All the money is accounted for.

The cashier has $70, the waiter's $2 should be added to the cashier's making $72. The other $3 should be added to 72 making $75.

the bill was $75 and they paid $25 each.
after discount they only had to pay $70 so they get $5 back.but waiter took $2 so they ended up paying $72 because as a group they were $2 short.
its just a play of words. a little like the proof of 1=2.

They didn't pay $75. They only paid $70 plus $2 that went to the waiter. The total they paid all together was $72.

Why are you asking the same question again with different amounts?
You subtract the $2 from the $72, not add it. They didn't pay $75 after they got their dollar back, they paid $72, then he has the remaining $2 which takes it to $70.

It was stolen by Space Aliens and it (along with the millions of other dollars missing from variants of this dumbass problem) is being used to help finance a conspiracy to experiment with human-alien gene mutation in Area 51.
