I'm a new mom with a 7 week old baby and we'll be traveling to PA next week, which is going to be a horribly long day , hour drive to denver airport, we're supposed to get to the airport 2 hours early, 3 hour plane ride and then another 2 hour drive to get to the in-laws house (and then a week of dealing with the in-laws but that's a different problem). Has anybody traveled with a newborn that has some advice for keeping him happy and me sane. Also, how did you manage the logistics, where do you change his diaper, where do you get warm water for formula, we're holding him(couldn't afford the third ticket) so where does his carseat go? ..etc.

I got warm water in the airplane. They serve coffee so they do have warm water.
I flew to Europe and there was no problem at all about the water.

During the waiting hours, I went to a restorant or caffe and asked them to warm the water for me in the cappucino maker (with the steam) or they can give you some warm water.
Make a plan of the feedings you need and what time.
May be you dont need to feed him on the plane but just before you leave and then when you arrive. So use the restorant/caffe warm water.
Dont take water in a bottle, with the new rules, they will take it from you. Put the formula in and take it as milk.... Formula can stay 1 hour in room temp. even longer.

Flying w a newborn is easier than w older kids or babies.

Take a pacifier for take off - landing.
If you fly in a big plane they might have a bassinet. Ask ahead and make a reservation to get it.

Changing the baby in the bathroom table is a bit hard. You will need help . the baby could fall if you try to put the diaper in the trash place, you will get the idea when you try it!!!

I was alone and I couldnt leave the baby on that table to clean the
sink, throw the diaper, wipes , wash my hands etc.... or to close that table with the baby, the bag .....the place is so small and DIRTY.
\So I left everything as it was , left the baby in the bassinet and asked the person next to me to keep an eye on her, went back to clean and found a woman giving me angry looks about the messy toilet...
So unless your husband is waiting to take the baby, change him/her in your lap or in the seat.

I had to do this also I had traveled from Philadelphia to Maui, HI and it was over a 9 hour flight. Thank goodness on American Airlines they have bassinets that hook to the wall so the baby can sleep in them unless there is turbulence and then you have to hold the baby. I just brought the bottles with hot water in them and the singles powder and mixed them that way. You can change the diaper in the planes bathroom they have a changing table on most planes now. My son was only 4 weeks and it worked out well, the plane ride actually made him sleep alot also! Good Luck. I would call your airline and ask if they offer the bassinets that way you don't need the carseat!

No problem!

1. Bring the carseat...if there is any extra seating, the airline staff might just allow you to put the seat there...Otherwise, you can check it for free.

2. You can also bring a stroller and check that plane-side and be able to use it right up to boarding, and as soon as you de-plane on the other side.

3. BRING INFANT TYLENOL DROPS... Dose your baby with the appropriate amount right before boarding; then feed him during takeoff...The action of swallowing while the plane gains altitude will keep him from having pain in his ears due to changing air pressure (and keep him from screaming). The tylenol and full tummy should send him straight to sleep shortly after he finishes the bottle.

4. You don't have to have warm water...room temperature should work just fine. Alas, that means getting PLANE water (which will have to be from the bathroom faucet as they wont be giving you any prior to takeoff, and with all the latest airline scares, you can't bring bottled)...But it will still work...Mix the formula in the bottle; you can always warm it up a bit next to your skin FIRST, if the water feels too cold in the bottle.

This is how I got through my travel day with my 3 month old; 1/2 hour of driving to the airport; 2 1/2 hours of waiting pre-flight; TWO separate flights, same day, with an hour wait between them, then two more hours drive on the other end.

Hope it helps! =)

P.S. Most airports have changing tables in the womens restrooms...Use Pampers or huggies (more absorbant) and bring lots of wipes; You should pack about 10 diapers for the day, plus a receiving blanket to put him on top of (those tables are hard and cold), and it wouldn't hurt to bring some "changing pads" to keep him from decorating the receiving blanket.

With all that extra wait time, you'll have an opportunity to change him in the airport(s), and if he's sleeping (and wearing an extra absorbant diaper), no need to change him on the plane.

I traveled by plane with a 6 week old! He screamed bloody murder for about 2 hours. No thanks to ever doing that again!
Their ears pop a lot, and it hurts and scares them, so give him lots to drink. You might even see a doctor about giving him some medicine to help him sleep--honest-NOT whiskey.
Change his diaper in your lap. (Suffer.) Warm water from the air waitress, car seat should go in the overhead.
CHECK with the airlines for the size and regulations. Might have to check it.
When people give you dirty looks, just smile sweetly. Don't be cranky, defensive, or whiney. Let your husband deal with it a while and go wash your face, and cry in th ebathroom, if you have to. Almost everyone has been through something similar. Just stay optimistic, play with your baby, and talk sweetly. He has no idea why he is being tortured.
Remember if we couldn't tolerate crying babies, we would have disappeared as a species long before now. Good luck, hon.

They can put the carseat in luggage so you'll get it once you land. As for diapers, bring a blanket. If possible, change him in the bathroom (even planes have a small table that drops down in the bathroom usually). If not possible, spread that blanket across your legs and change him in your nap. You might not get warm water, but you can carry lukewarm water in the bottles and put the formula in small pre measured containers or amounts. If you are holding him, he'll prolly be happy. For you, bring a good book or a few magazines.

Almost everyone had great tips for you (except for the jackass who told you to rent a car...I hope he gets airsick). Different babies will respond to different things. My little boy has been flying since he was ten weeks old.

My biggest tip for you is this: no matter what happens, you'll eventually get off of the plane. And if he did scream the whole way, you can remind him of that when he's about 13.

i traveled all by myself with my baby when she was a new born. i was so worried. but surprisingly enough she slept the whole time. it was so easy. i changed her diaper right before we got on the plane and right when we got off, there just wasnt any room for diaper changing on the plane. for warm water just ask a flight attendant, since you cant bring liquids on the plane anyway. they will have some. his carseat will go with your checked baggage and they dont count it as one of your pieces, at least they didnt with mine. just bring a favorite blanket and a pacifier if he uses one, it probably wont be as hard as you think. good luck.

All of what has been said is good.

The big problem you may have is ear clearing, both on the way up and the way down. Try to feed him on take off and landing, as the swallowing will help.

This will probably be the easiest journey of all the ones you make for the next 5 years or so, maybe 10.

Get him to drink his bottle on take off and landing. That should help with the ears popping. However, it's hard to say whether or not he will like the plane. Some babies do, some don't.

I probable does no longer attempt to fly with a splash one till now a million month previous. airways won't pick to enable an toddler who's ill fly. different then that I certainly have not heard of any regulations.
