Here's a link with some culturally accepted meanings:
http://members.aol.com/katydidit/fingers.htm
But sometimes there are other, more personal reasons :
My husband and I both are both non-traditional and wear our wedding rings on the middle finger of our right hands.
If we get rudely hit on by people, we simply show them our middle finger (with ring) and reply - "Sorry, not interested - I'm married".
People get the point pretty quickly.

Generally, the engagement and wedding rings are worn on the ring finger of the left hand. This finger is thought to have a direct connection to the heart. However, I am left-handed. I broke my wedding ring three times due to being left-handed. Of course that may have been a sign since that marriage ended in divorce!
If I should ever marry again I may try wearing my ring on my right hand. It may be safer there. I will always run the risk of people thinking I am single, but it is not that hard to say "no" if someone tries to make a move on me. I already wear my watch on my right wrist to stop from hitting it on everything and breaking it.

i think if the ring is worn on the index finger, it means she's looking..
i forgot the others... I'll try to look for the meanings...
but the most important part is when the ring is worn on the ring finger at the left hand.. it means she's married with a wedding ring of course or engaged if that's a diamond ring...

I can only tell you that if you like to finger, you might want to either take them off OR make sure they are good and tight.
