I went to a pizza parlor today, & the cashier didn't accept my pennies. Pennies are a VALID US currency, so why are they never accepted?

You didn't seriously try to pay for a whole pizza in pennies, did you? The reason that this wouldn't be accepted is because it is ridiculous of you to expect someone to count out 1800 pennies just to cover a pizza.

And they can "refuse service" to anyone, even if it means taking a loss on the cost of a pizza to avoid the costs incurred in having their cashier stand there for three hours counting pennies.

FYI, most banks and grocery stores have change machines these days, that will take your money, count it out, then print a receipt for how much cash the store/bank owes you. In general, this will be much easier for you, too, than counting out thousands of pennies.

They are legal tender (up to a certain amount) so they have to accept them.

I wouldn't try to pay a $1,000 bill in pennies, unless I was ready to fight.

They're a pain in the neck - they are practically worthless.

but the store owner sounds like a bit of a jerk.

I don't think they have to accept them. They are legal for all debts, public and private. But if they withhold the pizza until you pay, you technically do not have a debt. You only have a debt once you take posession
