In the first movie (called "The Pink Panther"), the "Pink Panther" was the name of the diamond that was stolen... that's why the film was named what it was. There was no reference in that film, during the credits or anywhere else, to it actually being a panther. Similarly, the second film in the series is actually just called "A Shot in the Dark", also having nothing to do with the cartoon panther. The cartoon character came later, and became so popular that the subsequent films continued to me be named after it, despitehaving nothing to do with the films. I've often thought the movies should have been named "Inspector Clouseau Strikes Again," and "The Return of Inspector Clouseau" rather than "The Pink Panther Strikes Again", etc...

In the original movies, the Pink Panther is a diamond - not a panther who is pink.
The cartoon of the Pink Panther at the beginning of the movies was a play on the name of the jewel. I guess kids liked the movie's beginning so much that they created the cartoon.

I gues you were not paying attention. The diamond is said that if you hold it to the light you can see what looks like a pink panther dancing. that is th myth of the diamond. The movie is about the diamond and the inspector. The cartoon came later because the graphics at the beginnig of the originla movie were cute. Frist camt the movie and then cam the cartoon not the other way around,

the creator of the pink panther also made the movies basing them on the detective in the pink panther
the pink panther is shown in the opening credits
the pink panther movies r with the pink panther because it is based on the cartoon and because that was the best of the creator's work :P

Licensing issues between the cartoon and the movie.
Remember that Owings Corning fiberglass owes some rights to Pink Panther due to insulation commercials.

Because of what you just said. In the original movies, it was a diamond. The opening credits by DePathe showed the animated character and played the Mancini theme. It became wildly popular. Thats why it's on the cover of the DVD. The cartoon character was never in the movies except in the opening and closing credits.
