Soccer has come to the US very late into the game, so to speak. Baseball, American Football, and Basketball have years ago captured the imagination of the American sports fan.
Bear in mind, though, that soccer as a participation sport is growing by leaps and bounds in communities all over the country. Soccer probably enjoys more popularity in the US than it ever has, which isn't to say that it enjoys great popularity, by any means.
It will continue to grow in popularity, but while I hate to use the word never, soccer won't usurp the aforementioned sports in the hearts of Americans in the foreseeable future.

I think Americans are very passionate about their sports, soccer has been outmanoeuvered by the big 4, baseball, American football, basketball and ice hockey. There just isn't any room in American hearts for a 5th major sport. Soccer remains very popular as a participation sport - hence 'soccer mums' as a social stereotype.

We have football firmly entrenched in our sports. Soccer has little room to compete, for football is highly organized with huge money behind it. I think soccer is a rougher game, but football is our national sport, perhaps as big as baseball. It has nothing to do with "cool" but when we see the riots and trampled people resulting from a soccer loss, we are befuddled as to how a game can get so out of hand...ridiculous! There is a point when a spectator sport seems to get out of hand. I dont' think that is "cool," I think it is reasonable. It would seem that in many countries, reason flies out the door when soccer is played, and we don't get it! I hope we never do.

I don't give in to things.. That's how i see it. Some cultures have the idea that you just do what everyne else does. But here if i don't do soccer, if i don't like American football, or whatever, i just don't do it.. and so what? That's how it is.. in other countries there culture makes it seem as though you have to be part of soccer culture.

My guess is that it because soccer is considered a "girl" sport, and "real men" play (what Americans call) FOOTBALL. American men are very insecure in their sexual identity are are willing to endure great discomfort and forego enormous pleasures rather than risk any behavior associated with effeminacy.

lol, cuz we suck at soccer and the only way to be 'better' than it is to put the sport down. Until we start winning the thing, no one will pay attention to it. We are the best at everything...everything that we choose to participate in that is. ON the otherside, i watched world soccer for the first time and its quite interesting..not as rowdy (sp?) as european fans tho.
