Wasn't Lincoln a Republican? Racists have completely changed parties and David Duke is just one example.
David Duke became a Republican in 1989 and hasn't looked back.
The deep South- the Confederacy is now solid red, Republican and not by accident. They haven't suddenly changed their views on race, but realized Republicans welcome racists today, now, and Democrats do not.
Steve Scalise said of himself "I'm David Duke without the baggage." and voted against MLK Jr day as recently as 2004.
Now he's replaced Eric Cantor, the last Jewish American Republican elected to national politics.
Yes there's a reason Southern racists like Steve Scalise and David Duke are now loyal Republicans- and one is House Majority Whip for the GOP. The GOP are seeing more racists and less minorities in their ranks for a reason, and hearkening back to the civil war or even the 60's or 80's doesn't change the blatant racism we are witness to every day as cops kill unarmed blacks, Republicans urge and defend torture and suspension of civil rights, hold rallies with effigies of the President being lynched - and they vote out their Eric Cantors in favor Steve Scalise and other David Duke proteges.
Every year an unrepentant Neo Nazi or skinhead runs for office as a Republican- and sometimes win. This is an irreversible trend. I understand it's embarrassing to many Republicans these days as it should be, but the answer is barring racists from your party - not imagining it's the 1960's or the 1860's hoping to shift blame somehow rather than cleaning house as William F Buckley urged successfully, barring racists from the GOP in his day. He is dead and his son is now a Democrat, who switched parties as a Northern Conservative - rather than change his views- even as David Duke did in 1989, some 26 years ago, when he finally became a Republican.

No, he was a Republican member of the Louisiana legislature and the Republican candidate for Governor of Louisiana in the early 1990s, after serving for many years as the "Grand Wizard" of the KKK. I guess this one kinda backfires on you, as you were apparently trying one of your typically stupid moves in this forum, trying to discredit ideas by associating people who hold those ideas with other people who are clearly objectionable -- as though that proved something. For the record, I do not believe you are stupid, wrong, or a poor citizen because you apparently belong to the same party as David Duke; I believe those things of you because I have seen so much of the witless feces-throwing that you substitute for questioning. The fact that your methods and Duke's are so similar is purely coincidence, from my perspective.

He has tried to run as a Republican, Democrat & Populist Parties. He was the Grand Poobah or whatever the hell the title is of the KKK. Didn't I read where in your home state of Texas that the Ku Klux Klan Rallied in Support of Republican Proposition 2? Google that and see what you come up with....

After the War Between the States, the KKK became the enforcement wing of the Democrat Party. It allowed Democrats to keep black citizens from voting against segregationist Southern Democrats.

David Duke has run as a democrat, a republican, a populist, and an independant. The only party for which he's actually gained the nomination was the republican party, however, which caused a massive backlash. Later he basically just took money from people NOT to run against them.

The South was predomiantly Democrat, as the North was predominantly Republican, until sometime around FDR's administration. FDR was the governor of New York, and was a Democrat.
Since those days, the South evolved to becaoming predomiantly Republican, while the North became predominantly Democrat.
Dukes was probably originally a Democrat because his family and colleagues had been Democrat; he switched because the morals and idealogy of the "New Republicans," i.e. against minorities and gays, treating poor people like trash, et al, properly matched his theology.
I am proud to say he is a Republican; but I am sure the Republican Party is not too happy of his new allegiance.

Good link (below) with lots of interesting info on Duke - go, read!
He WAS a Democrat and later switched to the Republican party.
I love the fact that he once wrote a sex manual for women, and his nome-de-plume was "Dorothy Vanderbilt".

He was a Democrat, but I believe he later switched to Republican.
All of the other Republican leaders - local, state and federal - promptly disavowed and condemned him.
