The word "his" and the word "its" are both third person possessive pronouns. "His" is used to show that something belongs to him (a male), whereas "its" is used to show that something belongs to something which is gender neutral (a thing).

Example: John went to HIS (John's) room. HIS (John's) favorite baseball card was missing from ITS (the baseball card's) spot in HIS (John's) collection.

well, uh, "his" refers to something that belongs to a male person.
EX. That is HIS bike

"its" on the other hand, refers to something that belongs to an in-animate object such as a car.
EX. The car won't drive because ITS engine is broken.

these are both examples of the posessive form however.

"Its" is also a contraction for IT IS, and is used to do something such as tell the weather
EX. IT'S going to rain today.

finally, if you are a religious person, you may use "His" to talk about God.
EX. The way to heaven is to follow His example.

in this case, the "H" must always be capitalized.

His is a possessive form for a male, like "that is His hat",
Its is a possessive form for it, which is usually talking about an object or animal. In English we don't have male or female objects like other languages do.

his is a possessive form of he meaning a person
its is a possessive form of it meaning a nonspecific gender/object
ie...the personal pronoun for he/his is John. so you say
That is his (John's) watch.
or the possessive pronoun it/its would be owl
That is its (the owl's) nature.
