A mobile phone is great for emergency situations so you can call for help. It lets you call someone when you are away for home. The new phones let you take pictures, text message, check e-mail, and play mp3's. The downside is that you are charged a lot of money if you go over your minutes. You are charged by the minute. Hidden fees, activation and early termination fees, etc. A mobile phone is a major distraction to people driving, walking, etc It is also a major annoyance in theaters,etc..

Merits are many so no need to list it but demerits are often gets unnoticed or neglected. Ethically itself there are vast of demerits, the cell camera, the voice recording features could be used to intrude some one's privacy and also with the increase in number of mobiles, people are becoming immobile. Because everything can be done by just making one phone call, or one text msg, or paying bills online with internet services. You loose much of your physical activity although it is gud that it saves time. Now a days people have lost sense of public decorum. For example, loud and irritating ringtones, shouting aloud in public places, disturbing others with their chitchat in offices etc. On the health aspects too mobiles are provene to be detrimental over long term use. The radiations themselves are dangerous to males if they keep the mobile in their pockets. If you keep them near your chest, it is again dangerous to your heart

I'm assuming you're referring to cell phones, and not cordless phones. Anyway, there is research going on right now that is asking kind of the same question. They (don't ask who "they" are, I don't know) are studying the people (specifically kids and teens) who are using cell phones a lot. There is speculation that has been going around for years that cell phones can dramatically increase your chances for brain cancer, mainly because the cell phone is a mini micro wave source and you've got it stuck up against your head for hours everyday. (And I'm not singling anybody out by saying "you"!) In about 25-30 years, there will probably be a massive country-wide cancer testing thing-a-ma-jig and they will be able to see if cell phones do increase brain cancer. Uhmm.... I can't really think of many good things about cell phones..... :P

Pros are free long distance with most and many have great plans regional or countrywide to avoid roaming. Reception and overall quality is much better many new features as well for music or the internet. Cons depending on where you live is still the signal and availability of less companies wich helps some corner the market and cost. Otherwise great! I Hope this helps.
