Ok this seems to be met with alot of hostility. First of all, I don't believe in god and I do believe you are pretty much correct on all your points here. Are we seriously once again dealing with people who don't believe in dinosaurs? Seriously go to a museum of natural history- there are definately dinosaur bones- which prove that there is no way that things could have gone the way they were said to in the bible.
Secondly- Those of you who do beLIEve in god... I'm not saying that there is anything wrong with that- but- do you honestly believe that God wants you to have blind faith? Thats where I think the total mis-direction is- with blind faith.

I don't agree entirely with you. I do not think the bible is a glorified rule book, but I do think it's a book of fairytales. I doubt that imaginations have really changed that much in 2006 years. We have the ability to tell fictional stories now, no doubt they did back then too.
However I do not think this is the place to pose such a question. Everyone has their own opinion whether it's right or wrong. So can we not just agree that the bible is a well-written book with several authors who were inspired by something/someone that/who compelled them to put pen to paper? Just like every other author.
No one can deny that the bible was written at some point in the past. Whether it's a glorified book of rules, a collection of fairytales, fiction or truth, it was written down. You and I may not believe in what is written on its pages, but it exists.

I didn't evolve from a monkey. The British law is based on the bible and most laws in other countries based on our law. So yes, it is a rule book and the plain English version - as in the New testament where Jesus tried to change the rules and explain them with simple stories (parables) didn't work out too well. But science proves that there are laws that can be proven. Newton had an apple drop on his head and figured out it accelerated towards the ground at 32 ft per second per second. Give or take a bit! Lots of other laws of mathematics and physics. Created laws or just a result of chaos theory. If water froze just one degree lower would we all freeze to bloody death. Why do doctors try to treat illness - maybe it's natural to be ill and die? but they believe in people being perfect - disease messes up that perfection. Genetic mutation messes up that perfection. We mess up that perfection. Was Jesus genetically perfect? Who knows?

Wow! Is that a scientific observation or just an opinion. Have you studied this subject? Both sides objectively, I mean.
Sounds like you have a lot of anger. I agree that the Bible was written by man. But, the words came from the Lord. I also believe that the Bible is symbolic. Too many people take things literally...especially the Old Testament. Jesus speaks in parables.....riddles....We are not to know all the answers...he gave us freedom to discover and choose.
I do believe because it is written by the "unperfect" man that it is not 100%. But, I would rather live by those rules than any other. I want to walk through those pearly gates someday and bow to my Lord and Savior.

Hey Ben, have you studied the Bible to reach this conclusion?
Also, I hate to be pedantic but there isn't actually a question in your statement so why the question mark? Or is your question 'Is it just a glorified rule book?'
The answer to that would be a long one and take a long time to work out. I agree that it's worth thinking about though - as you've obviously been doing. Some questions just don't have answers.

Stephen Hawking wrote in Brief History of Time - Although physicists can say how the universe was made not one of them can say why..
The top scholars do not discount creationism so I don't either - that said whilst keeping an open mind I am not religious either.. Darwin is a hero of mine too..
The problem with creationism is that if you have a watch (earth) and you believe there is a watchmaker (God) you always have the problem of who made the watchmaker..
On the other hand though it cannot be discounted out of hand either - any biologist knows how amazing the chances are that all this evovled and some believe that in some ways it is like the universe knew we were coming..it is not impossible that evolution is the whole story but statistically virtually so..
Again though - some philosophers believe that since we unlike other beings are aware of our mortality then if God did not exist - it would be necessary for us to invent him or her.. (in patriarchal society note however it is always going to be a He.. with old patterns of inequality and subjegation continuing..)
So the upshot of it all is that none of us can be certain - faith/science/beliefs are all just conjecture at the end of the day yet it has to be the most fascinating set of Q's - why are we here? what happens when we die? etc

>> ok, i save listening to approximately human beings are extra useful then animals >> reason we've souls... >> now tell me, why do animals no longer have souls? you're suitable that animals have not got souls -- yet, then, neither will we. The Bible is amazingly exhibit approximately this. notice the perfect terminology used here: Gen 2:7 And our lord god formed guy of the dirt of the floor, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of existence; and guy grew to alter right into a residing soul. 1Co 15:40 5 And so it particularly is written, the 1st guy Adam became made a residing soul; the final Adam became made a quickening spirit. This incorporates the fish and the mammals interior the sea: Rev sixteen:3 And the 2nd angel poured out his vial upon the sea; and it grew to alter into using fact the blood of a ineffective guy: and each residing soul died interior the sea. study here further Biblically-based proofs with reference to the immortal soul and the eternal spirit. God bless.

Where's the science in the Bible? If you're going to the effort of denouncing it in the name of social engineering then you'd be better off looking at it from an historical fictional point of view.
Either way, I agree in part. Irrespective of the reality of the Bible, the core values expressed by the book may be worthy of consideration - but, ultimately, it is an exercise in social engineering no matter which way you look at it.

It's one way to control the masses! Put the fear of God into folk, the more who believe the more powerful the Word becomes. I don't believe in heaven either, if we can't remember what it was like prior to conception/birth, then dont we just go back to that state after death. Nothingness. And we still get people nowadays claiming to be the son of God. However, each to their own, believe what you like if it gets you through the day.

Okay, so if this is some joke {glorified rule book} who is the "prankster" who wrote it to enjoy the results of the naives who follow the rules; the "in control"?
I mean if I did something like this I would want to hang around to see the fools that are following it.

I have this argument with my father all the time. The hard part though is that although i can show him all of the scientific based things i believe in, i can't actually disprove what's in the Bible.
Very frustrating at times, but i guess that's where faith comes into it...
