Burn him a mixed CD of his favorite songs that he can enjoy in the car.
Make one of his favorite meals and his favorite dessert. Cake isn't really an absolute for a birthday...I rarely have one.
Back massage. I've never met I guy who wouldn't enjoy that.
Give him control of the remote control for the day.
Coupons...20-minute backrub, wash his car, Make his favorite meal or dessert (with 2-day notice), Get out of a chore free, etc.

Best way to save money is first to understand where you are spending it. Try and keep track of every $ spent for a couple of weeks and then do yourself up a budget. List things in essential and non-essential columns. Essential being Rent, bills, food, loan repayments etc, and the non essentials such as eating out etc. ONce you understand where you money is going you will be able to then cut back on your non-essentials. Work out an amount to save each pay cycle and put the money into an account as soon as you get paid. Make sure you have limited access to the account where you might need 24hrs or something to access the cash, and only use it in emergencies. Important thing is to transfer the money before you even get a chance to spend it. See if your employer will deposit it directly into your savings account when you get paid. Best of luck.

make him a nice dinner at home or a picnic and write him a love note or poem. just do something from the heart.
