Wow, some very interesting answers !!!! I've been working on transmissions for 21 years and here is my opinion. If your husband is slowing down and not on the gas pedal, and providing the rpms are right, you should be able to move the shifter into neutral with one finger, and not have needed to step down on the clutch pedal. This will do absolutely no harm to the transmission, clutch or engine. If however he is using force to do this, then it's a different story. I can assure you that I'm able to shift up & down with a manual transmission without using the clutch at all, but I've been doing transmissions for a long time so I've developed the feel for doing this. It is not something that I'd tell someone to do, but if done under perfect conditions, it won't hurt the trans or clutch.

not a good idea. pulling it out of gear without disengaging the clutch puts extra stress on the syncros since it is under load from the engine. using the clutch takes the torque load off of the transmission making it easier to shift and reduces stress on the internal components. it is possible to shift without the clutch and not do damage but it takes practice and still can cause premature wear on the syncros.

Most of the time nothing will happen. However, there is the odd chance of chipping a gear tooth in which case the car will sometimes begin popping out of gear on its own.

Yes the poster above me is correct.

The others who do this and say no it doesnt break my tranny- that is because the tranny HAS TO BE made to withstand some abuse before it fails.

You are lucky it didnt fail on you yet. The clutch disengages any pressure on the gears before you shift.

If you can easily shift without the clutch that means your tranny is slipping.

i do it all the time in my vehicles and dont have a problem. you can even shift into gear without the clutch if the rpms are high enough

that can hurt the trans but not the clutch. the only way to do what he is doing without damaging anything is to let off of the gas and brfore the RPM's drop too low pop the trans out............but it takes timing!!
