I get confused between the funky smell of urine caused by eating asparagus vs the smell caused by eating Brussels sprouts.
There are various chemical names applied to these compounds and not everyone agrees with what to call them.
For Asparagus: Most authorities feel that the compound that causes the odor in urine after consumption of asparagus is methylmercaptan, a sulfur-containing derivative of the amino acid, methionine. This is disputed by a few individuals who claim that the odoriferous compound is asparagine-amino-succinic-acid monoamide, which is derived from the amino acid, asparagine. In either case, the product is formed as a derivative during the digestion and subsequent breakdown of beneficial amino acid.
For Brussels Sprouts: The compounds are loosely grouped with Indoles. Some of the dietary Indoles are called Bis (3-indolyl) methane (the same as diindolylmethane) also Indole acetonitrile. Others say that allyl isothiocyanate is the chemical name for what causes the odor in urine after eating Brussels sprouts
