Try contacting a nearby zoo or animal reserve. We had an iguana who grew to an enormous size - too big for the house - and we found him a home at a nearby butterfly conservatory.
Your neighbour shouldn't think of selling the tortoise - how'd he like to be sold by someone who kept him around for a few years? - but of the tortoise's best interests, which are a good home where he can be left in peace and protection from those who would harm him in a myriad ways.

A tortoise that size must be one of 3 species Aldabra, Galapagos, or Sulcatta. Considering your Brittish english spelling of the word neighbour I am guessing you are from the UK which would then most likely make the tortoise an Aldabra tortoise as they were commonly broght over to the UK at the turn of the century. If this is indeed an Aldabra tortoise, then the price of this species can fetch well over $25,000 US. In fact from time to time you will see postings for such tortoises on Kingsnake.com under the classified section.

Hi do you have any wildlife parks or zoo's nearby, I'm sure they would be happy to take your tortoise, if not try the R.S.P.C.A as they would be able to re-home the tortoise with somebody.
Is the tortoise called Esio Trot ?

Phone London Zoo. They used to have a Galapagos tortoise colony, if they don't any more they'll be able to advise.
He'll need a license to sell it legally.

Take it to a wildlife sancturary in your country. Since you gave a British spelling to the word "neighbor", I can't give you specific help.
Here in the USA our states have Fish and Wildlife agencies that work with wild animals. Here in the USA, in the Southwest people will often "adopt" desert tortises and keep them in their yards. Those tortises cannot be returned to the wild and need to live in protected sanctuaries.
Perhaps there is a sanctuary in your countrywhere this one can live out its years, and years, and years......

Paul W. in reading your question I feel that you are from the UK or as we say "across the pond". Can you donate it to the local zoo or some sort of animal group?

Try the zoo. That's were most animals end up that have gotten too big for their owners.

I want one. Some people think that these are useless animals but I like them.I like to play with them and sometimes I sit next to mine and I think lots of things.Although you should search and find out how many years they live and if you want....It's your decision!
