Apparently according to a job survey my personality is best suited to this role. But "Computer Systems Analyst" is still very generalised I wondered what kind of jobs are out there and what they do specifically. I wondered what qualifications I need to start in this role, only interested in U.K. recognised qualifications as this is where I live. Cheers for all your help :)

Hi, I have been one for years now. You are essentially a programmer who can also do DB and system design, write specifications and basically do your own work from start to finish.
You may need to do some debugging and customer support also.
I am qualified to A level standard, but it is easier to get in with a degree to be honest.

I work with a number of systems analysts.

Systems analysts are not necessarily computer programmers although many are.

The role of a systems analyst is to analyse a system.

For example

If a business is running with a paper based system where the jobs coming into them are on pieces of paper card the company may want to change this to make everything more efficient - The systems analyst analyses where the paper system could be made better and more efficient and then works out what the specification of the computer system to implement would be. The specification would include everything the computer system would have to do in detail. They then take this and work out how this could be implemented at a technical level.

Systems analysts are not only to do with computer software as the best system may be to use a different coloured paper card or something similar and that may solve all the business' problems.

Some systems analysts will then design the software and implement it, testing it etc .. and going through the full software lifecycle, but this is not necessarily in the job of a systems analyst.

I would say to get a good job as a systems analyst you would need a degree in computing/computer science as you need to understand the process in developing medium/large pieces of software.

The other alternative is to try and get someone to take you on in a junior role and work your way up.
