Because they are the best ones.
**EDIT - Remember what Holden Caulfield said in "Catcher in the Rye".
'People who cry at movies are the meanest people I've ever met.'

The meolodrama. Passion, sorrow, tension, tragedy are all emotions that help make more sense of the world. Sentimental movies are also ways to make the viewer FEEL empathy for the characters going trhough the melodrama, without making the viewer actually face those same situations.
One gets to live vicariously through the characters, in order to live through the drama and either eventually triumph or fail. Both ends sometimes feel good.

Maybe because that is the only outlet people have for their emotions. Sometimes you need a good cry and movies can give you that. People feel connected with the characters and can relate to them in some way. It's almost surreal.

Not sure if I understand your question, but my belief is that people like movies that can make them feel something. The deeper the emotion the better.

Well, why do people like violence? why do people like mathematics why do people like paris hilton? The answer is because we all like different things. Either it be a emotional love film that makes your heart feel warm and romantic, or a film that promotes somthing that you are interested in, we all feel comfortable somthing, and to some people it's emotional movies :)

I thiks it because most people can relate to it. Unlike when you see a movie and the person is always happy. (Think about 9/11)
