Stu, as a 40-something woman with 2 tattoos(one I have had for 20 years, the other one just a year)...nothing crude and strategically placed (so that they can be covered by most clothing choices)...I say go for it! You've wanted it for a long time, and you deserve it! Enjoy!

First off - Good job on dropping the 10 stone!
Obviously this is a personal choice, here is my personal story/opinion.
20 years or so ago a bunch of guys from my rugby club went to get team tattoos, I wanted to go but ended up working. At the time, the tattoos looked great and I was disappointed that I missed out.
I never did reschedule an appointment to get the tattoo. Now when I see those faded tattoos on my old rugby buddies I'm so happy that I didn't get one.

I always think about it this way: can you imagine being a grandfather with one? If you're going to get, say, a Ramones tattoo on the back of your neck, or F*ck You tattooed across your knuckles, and twenty years from now be bouncing your little granddaughter on your knee in the park, it might not be such a grand idea. But if you are a reasonable adult and want to honor your body in a tribal way with a piece of lasting art to mark an occasion such as this with a symbol that will have lasting beauty and meaning for you, then by all means. Tattoos are sexy, honest, painful, and worth it ... because if you take all this into consideration, you've earned it. Congratulations!

Stu,it depends on what kind of tattoo you are considering getting. Do you want words or do you want symbols? If you get words, you don't want cliches that are only good for the time period,if you pick a symbol, you want to pick one with a really deep meaning and will fit with you as an individual because you are the one who has to look at that tattoo everyday. You don't want to get something you may not like later and end up paying in high costs of tattoo removal. If you went with a name, I would just use my own name, some people use mate and spouses' names and end up breaking up, at least you know you won't be leaving yourself, just a ;little humor there. If you are unsure, start with something small and simple but yet strong in meaning like a white dove or cross for example or you could use the acronyms of your full name. Good luck in your decision.

I'd say no, because I think men/women who go out and get there first tattoo AFTER the age of 28 is kind of pathetic. Tattoos are popular because they are a taboo and a rebellion. Most people get them in their early 20s for that reason.
You are too old to be rebelling against anyone. If you already had them it would be one thing, but waiting this long would just make you look like you were going into a mid-life crisis or something.

if youve been thinking abotu tifor that long it seems like it may be the time for you. and relax it shouldnt be so bad... unless it crosses your spine... anyway the important issue here is that Tattoos last forever.. and this is a good thing.. but research research research.... if some one can "squeeze" you intoday forget it... when a certin artist is booked 3 months in advance and cost WAY to much.. theres a reason.... id say about 60% of artist might give you decent tatt.... maybe more.. but only 5% can give you what YOU want... too many times is the color wrong or somethigns too big or small... so go in knowing what you want and work with a talented artist that understands you... you need to find someone who can properly fill the gap of whats in your head and get it on your skin. You dont want to go to an old time artist who does work on 50year old saliors if you want a beautifluy color blended tattoo... pay the "top artist" in town might not be worth it if you can find some who specalized in free hand script... if thats what you want.... so go in KNOWING what you want or your seeming "nice tattoo" to others might be ok but its not what you wanted.. and hence not worth it.... or worse and FAR FAR more common is youll have a crappy tattoo. From myself and people i know... i would say ruff estimite...50% of artists just plain are not talented... but thats just my experiance.. but look how many bad tattos are out there.... some shops laugh and say "look what this guy wants on him" and do it... a better shop might say no we dont want to do that tatt.... i saw a guy once with a niki swossh tatt ...yeah real cool buddy and it wasent even perfect.......
im rambleing
but find a GOOD shop and KNOW what you want where you want it and dont say "abotu this big" if they are not tracing it have them draw you a few dots and say this big?

I think it is a great way to reward all of your hard work!! Get something that will symbolize how far you've come and what you've done to get there. Not something silly, that means nothing(believe me I'm living it) But if you have thought about this tattoo for that long, go get it!! The pain is not that bad, there's a stigma surrounding tattoos that makes people scared, but once they go through it, they realize they were being silly for being so scared, what I'm trying to say is u will be fine, don't worry!!! GOOD LUCK!!!

Stu,
Congratulations on your weight loss. I do know that this brings about change in people. Do you really want the tattoo to be the change? How about this take the money that you would have spent on the tattoo and invest it in your future. With losing weight you should certainly live longer. Another idea would be to take the money and donate it to a charity of your choice.
Good Luck!

Stu,
Getting a tatoo is a matter of personal choice. But there are some things to consider. Why are you getting one? Will your future wife like this or not? And in my case being a female: Do I want my grandkids who maybe tending to me in my old age to say "Oh my gosh! Grandma has a wrinkled fairy on her butt! OOOOOH!"
You can't make these decisions but by a poll of people. My husband has three and we discussed it before he did it. But for me personally, thinking it through, it wasn't a choice.

I say yes because tattoos with meaning behind them is important. Tattoos have helped get over many things in their lives. I personally have 3 tattoos right now and I want more. They're addictive.
