Faster, cuter emoticons, better!
Also, you can say way more to your friends when they are right there instead of getting a simple 1 word reply each day.

With instant messenging you can surf the web while still talking to a friend. If your chatting on the phone you have to listen to what they are saying but with IM you can read what you want to read and get back to the IM when you feel like reading the message and then replying. It gives you the ability to do more and only listen when it fits your time frame. Another benefit to this is that people tend to leave the unwanted details out of the conversation because it is easier to say it then it is to type it. If you are talking to someone and it can be a very long explanation you will tend to shorten it as much as possible in order to keep from typing so much.
If you verse instant messaging against email it is usually because you can get an instant reply and reply back if needed and you also know when they get the message as long as they reply to you.

I'm not young but I will tell you that I think it is kind of exciting, closer and just fun. Used instant messaging to be in touch with my sister long distance, have interacted long distance with my Sweetheart for over a year before we made it permanent...and just have had a blast with it.
Although I still like email tons and tons to send e-cards
and quick messages. Especially to the office of someone that I don't want to interup during their business day, but want to tell them something I feel is important to share right away.
Why are you concerned about it? Everyone has their own thing. If instant messaging does not appeal to you, then don't do it...not an issue my friend.

I can think of 3 reasons:
#1. I use IM because you can see if the person is online or not.
#2. Sometimes e-mails can take a long time to arrive, and e-mails are not guaranteeed delivery (TCP/IP based networking comes into play)
#3. Instant gratification

Its more personable..... you can talk... or chat rather instantly... an e-mail you send to someone might get answered or fwd back in a day or two. I still like e-mails and I like receiving them cause its like getting a great letter in the mail.........but I really do enjoy instant messaging alot, I enjoy the fast responses and the one on one talking without feeling nervous or scared. blessed be.

It's more fun because you actually get to talk to the other person and it's cheaper than a phone call. People will always prefer a dialogue to writing a letter.
