July 5, 1996 Dolly the sheep is the first animal to be successfully cloned.

July 27, 1996 Olympic Bombing at Atlanta's summer games.

September 13, 1996 Tupac Shakur dies.

October 7, 1996 Fox News is launched, it will become the top rated news channel with six years. The channel will change the style and tone of news reporting.

November 1996 Bill Clinton beats Dole with 49.2% of the popular vote against Dole's 40.7%.

July 1, 1997 "Temporary Assistance to Needy Families" is enacted, it is the biggest change to human services program in over twenty years.

August 31, 1997 Princess Diana dies.

October 27, 1997 "Black Monday" stockmarkets crash around the world—also signals the beginning of the Asian Fiscal crisis which will devastate the economies of some Asian countries..

December 19, 1998 Congress Impeaches President Bill Clinton for charges related to the Monica Lewinsky scandal. Opponents of the impeachment create a mailing list called "MoveOn.org" which will become the heart of a major political movement.

You could check for advances in the understanding/treatment of things like autism, Parkinson's disease, cancer, Alzheimer's disease, spinal cord injuries, AIDS, heart disease, etc

Cell phones became far more common than they had been.

Satellite radio showed up.

Just about everything on the Internet was either new or else far more developed over those years.

Laptop computers have changed how things are done.

There have been changes in who the Speaker of the House (House of Representatives) has been, changes in who the Attorney General of the U.S. has been, changes in who is the Secretary of Defense (and a number of other cabinet members as well).

Condoleeza Rice is the first black Secretary of State.

Reality television shows started showing up.

JFK, Jr. and his wife and her sister were killed in the plane crash.

Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis died.

President Clinton was impeached.

Columbine was a big thing.

"The Station" nightclub fire in Rhode Island that killed a lot of people was a big thing.

The Michael Jackson scandal was a big thing.

The JonBenet Ramsey murder case was made into a big media thing

Hilary Clinton is the first First Lady to have become a senator.

There was the Catholic Church scandal

All kinds of famous people have died - celebrities, news people, politicians, etc.

September 11 occurred, but there have been all kinds of major changes as a result of that. For example, now architects are trying to design landscaping and walls that are pretty but that service as barriers to protect against vehicles carrying bombs.

The main thing that sticks out in my head are September 11th, the 2000 Presidential Election Fraud, Columbine shootings, and trying to impeach President Clinton. Also the Iraqi War.

Go to your local public library. Ask the staff for the World Almanac. There are volumes for each year. Ask for 1996-2005. (They're a year behind). Look in each volume for events. You will find LOTS of them.

Go look on www.wikipedia.com . You can look through each year and see events that happened those years. For example, if you go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2004_in_the_United_States it shows the events from 2004. At the top of that page are links to go one year ahead or one year back.
