click into wherever you're wanting to type the symbol - whether it be word, notepad, or a text entry box like the one i'm typing in now.
hold the 'alt' key to the left of the space bar, then type '0176' on the number pad at the far right of the keyboard. release the 'alt' key.
the symbol will appear. like this. °.

I pick a symbol font from my drop down font menu. You can open a word processing document and select a different font for each line and then type the alphabet and save. That way you will always have a list of what each font looks like.
