There is no god. There are religions, selling people all sorts of forgiveness from a supposed higher being; but, sorry that's all propaganda an reckless profiteering.

People accept this "higher being" marketing because they need to feel accepted and loved, probably if people realized that there is not such a thing, they would live happier lives, and they would devote more thought to maintaining a good relationship with everyone around, because there would not be anyone to "forgive" "sins" in the darkness of a church, temple or whatever

How do the other creatures of the world cope without a god? Well, maybe they do have gods...Who knows! They don't attend any church or gathering that I've witnessed...

The reason we as humans have a god is that we've evolved to be intelligent enough to ask "Who am i?" and "Why am I here" and "What's the meaning of life"? In other words, we are searching for answers to as-yet unanswerable questions, and are desperate to add meaning to our existence. A god fits the bill nicely to fill in the gaps in our understanding.

I believe that when we do figure out the answers to the origins of the universe, god will become irrelevant.

First ask what exactly does "GOD" do, and then you'll have your answer.

Well, thanks to physics, the sun would keep shining and the planets would keep spinning, so most likely life would go on.

Since Humans are the only form of life that believe in a "GOD", we can assume everything else on this planet would continue on pretty much "business as usual."

1/6th of the world doesn't even believe in "GOD", so a billion people wouldn't even care. Another billion are Buddhists, so make that 1/3rd of the world.

The rest are either Christians, Muslims or a mixture of all the remaining religions. Of these people, probably half are devout, while the other half are very casual, and only observe their religion under duress (funerals, holidays, car wrecks, etc.)

So that leaves us with say, two billion people who's lives will suddenly be put asunder when "GOD" vanishes. So what does "GOD" do for them that they will suddenly be without? Well, most of the devoutly religious people in this world live in poverty, and reside in oppressive countries where life is very unpleasant. Ostensibly they pray quite often, probably for life to improve, but since generation after generation it doesn't, we can rule out divine intervention as being a big loss in their lives. Probably they feel a sense of inner comfort believing they are being watched over by "GOD", but this feeling could probably be replaced by three hot meals each day, and clean drinking water. There is also the morale that comes from a strong religious community, but people are quite adaptable, and will easily accept reality television as their "raison de etre" in the absence of the church picnic.

What about all the other stuff "GOD" does? Well, people will have to get on without all the miracles he performs. They'll also have to learn to live without holy wars, since they'll be no reason to fight over whose "GOD" is better. Sadly, all the other wonderful things that have been ascribed to the almighty... the hurricanes, tsunamis, earthquakes, floods, droughts and plagues will still be here, since science has thorough explanations for why those happen.

On the plus side, we'll get to keep all the beautiful sunsets, the mountain vistas, the clandestine romances, the heavenly inspirations, the starry skies and the ooohs and ahhhs, since those are all perceptions of mortal man to begin with.

On the minus side, we'll lose our number one reason for why people do evil things. We'll lose our childhood instilled fantasies of heaven & hell. We'll lose the crutch that so many people fall back on anytime life gets too difficult. We'll lose our biggest excuse for failure, not searching for facts, and our biggest cop-out for not doing what we should. We'll lose our number one explanation for things we don't know, understand or can explain and we'll lose our all-purpose insurance policy against having to own up for our screw-ups. Worst of all, we'll lose our most common swear words, and our most popular phrase to yell out during horrible tragedies and great sex.

And if we're really really lucky, people might actually start to act like grown-ups in this world, because that's usually what happens when children outgrow the need for parental figures and have to take responsibility for themselves.

People wouldn't react at all, since without a God they wouldn't exist.
Apparently, since you put God in quotes, you imply this is not a metaphysical question, but a psychological or philosophical question. In this case, whatever your biased worldview was when you asked it, will determine what you want to hear. May God grant you the knowledge and wisdom of His existence.

The general first reaction will be like "WTF?"
There'll be a huge outcry and the Pope will be forced to make public addresses to bring confused and angry sentiments under control. Number of visitors to the Vatican will dwindle.
Tithes will be withdrawn from churches worldwide. Religious organisations will face a staggering financial crisis. Jobs will be lost.

But other than that, it makes no big difference.

The people who believe will still believe.

Those engaging in recreational activities forbidden by church doctrines will continue to do so.
People will go back to their jobs.
Preachers will continue to preach to the remaining believers.

Only difference is they'll kill you if you say there's no God.

Not trying to get at anyone, just imagining things.

I have to complement you on a very good question.

Lennon paraphrased somebody when he said that God is a concept by which we measure our pain. I'd change that to say that God is a concept by which we measure our actions.

Humans need to believe that there is a higher authority which governs our behavior and actions.

I don't think that humans can exist without an authority figure. Some people call that figure God.

God, controls those who can't control themselves. Like prison inmates always find God. Alchoholics and Drug abusers always find God. And so forth. God is a way to teach people how to lead good lives and also to scare them into it, i.e. Hell.

So all in all if we were as humans to know that God doesn't exist. No one would care and chaos would insue. Rape Murder and everything that God helps people restrict themselves from doing will be done.

People would run rampant with no one to be accountable to. There would be no laws because our laws are derived from the 10 commandments. There would be no marriage, because it is a union created by God. If there is no God, there is no heaven or hell, therefore there would be no purpose to your life.

But forget all that...because without God there would be no you -because GOD CREATES LIFE.

yeah then may be we would not have these stupid wars. if u think that concept of GOD makes people reasonable then ur crazy in first place. if there was no GOD then we would not have anything to establish superiority over each other and thus make life boring

there is no god, people just believe the darndest things. no really, it doesn't matter, you gotta remember the lack of communication that people had with each other back then. all it took was for one cult leader(jesus) to start preaching his beliefs and have his followers do the same. same as others worshipping volcanoes, spirits, beasts, plants, insects, cats, whatever. its just that jesus got the MAJORITY RULE. and other religions built themselves around that.
