I carried the same backpack through high school, college and graduate school. Jansport backpacks are indestructible!
btw, messenger bags are very "in" in college, but they will kill your shoulders. College texts are usually not lightweight.

I always used a back pack, and I put the straps on both shoulders, it might look dorky, but at the end of the day my back and shoulders didn't hurt as much as a single shoulder bag. Also they are easier to wear when on a bike.

Backpacks. I see a lot of people walking around with a tote and a handbag, and then fumble around with everything when they need stuff. Impractical, really. Backpacks aren't.

backpacks are still tops. lots more are using slings. hardcore students use the rolling luggage variety. some just stick with refular tote bags (mainly woman).

I had a backpack, and liked it becuase it distributed the weight of my books evenly, and did not make my back and shoulders hurt.

I always see messenger bags, draped over one shoulder. Pretty preppy and obnoxious if you ask me.
