I did twice while in university. The first time I felt all weird and light-headed. When I got back to my off-campus resident I had to lay on the floor and alternate between laughing and crying. The second time I did it, I was fine though. They always make you sit there afterwards and have a drink of juice and a cookie or something. So it's probably a good idea to have a full stomach when you get there to begin with.

Years ago I used to give regularly in Ireland. I then came to London and gave it for an urgent operation. The giving area was disgusting and unclean. I was very disappointed. When my wife (a state registered nurse) found out she went bananas. She claimed that the amount of blood wasted in hospitals in UK was enormous. Taking everything into consideration, I never gave since...........

I have; my high school ran a blood drive. I made the mistake of not eating beforehand (and this was early in the morning, and I hadn't eaten breakfast yet, so this was REALLY dumb), so I got dizzy and had to lie down for a good stretch of time. My appointment was for 8:30, and my English teacher made fun of me afterward when I came staggering up to her classroom at 10:45, pale as death and feeling like it, too. (I think her exact words were "Watson [that's my last name], you look like a vampire.")
On one of my friends, they hit the artery instead of the vein, like they're supposed to, so she gushed out blood and filled her bag within like two minutes. They had her stay a little while to make sure she was okay...and, of course, they can't use that blood, since they don't want oxygenated blood. And another one of my friends said they hit a nerve, so hers hurt like crazy and she felt woozy driving home.
So...when you do give blood, MAKE SURE YOU EAT FIRST. Eat a good, healthy breakfast and drink lots of orange juice.

I have given Blood..and its a great feeling to know you are helping save lives. I wish I could do it more...but I have to wait 3 more years. I had cancer and you have to be cancer-free for 5 years before you can donate again.......But I am looking forward to it again. I hope you get to also....its very commendable !!!!!

i have donated in the past, but it has been awhile. it was really cool one day when i got a post card from the hospital saying that they had actually used my blood. they just ripped the label off the blood bag and put it on a card and mailed it to me. awesome cool to know it was used locally.

I'd like to, but I pass out when having a small amount of blood drawn. But I really want to know my blood type so I might try it anyway.

Yes, many times. I've also donated platelets for cancer patients. For your iron--eat instant oatmeal, broccoli and steak! They are all high in iron.

Yes I have, once. I would love to do it again, but since I lived in Germany they said it was farm land and they have no way to test for.. Either mad cow or foot and mouth.. Can't remember which. Just silly I think!
