Just wondering, how would you deal with a superior who repremands people around their co-workers, and says things like "i'm gonna kill you" "i'm gonna slap you" and "i'm gonna fire you"? Keep in mind that reporting the boss to HR would be useless as they are allies.

Confront them directly. Have a sit down in their office. Advise them that, you know that they don't mean much by the comments, but you find it a little upsetting when they say things like "I gonna slap you" in an open forum. Advise them that you want to be a very good employee. So, if their is a problem with your work, you would appreciate if they would come to directly and voice any concerns.

Start keeping a notebook about everything this person says to you and others. When you have enough, take it to HR. If nothing is done, you can sue for harassment. I won $20,000 from a crazy boss for harassment. It's against the law if you report it and nothing is done.

Beside taking a tape recorder or a hidden video camera to catch “I'm going to kill you” on tape. I would just laugh and say, that would put you in prison wouldn't it now!

I would go to the local Labor Board. This is employee abuse and if he touches you in a physical manner that is not considered sexual, that is battery.
No one should be treated this way!
